I came across this on the TREMEC website about the 3160 in the GT350.

About the TREMEC TR-3160 6-Speed Manual Transmission
The TR-3160 six-speed transmission was designed to be used in light truck, SUV, and performance applications. It can be configured as either single or double overdrive. Centerline distance (the distance between the input shaft and the countershaft) is 81mm. This dimension is what typically drives torque capacity, hence its relevance here. A higher number means greater strength potential with respect to torque load as larger diameter gears can be used. Each gear (and shaft) is of SAE 4120H steel. All gears are hard finished with laser welded clutch teeth.

The aluminum cased TR-3160 weighs 112lbs (dry, with "mass reduction") and is an end-load design. Externally, the unit consists of an integral clutch housing, main case, and tailshaft housing. The multiple shift rail system allows for both direct mount or semi-remote shifters. The detent notches, springs, and bullets, have been designed to allow the best feel possible in terms of shift quality. Coupled with low friction linear shift rail bearings, the unit provides exceptionally smooth gear shifting.

Hightlights

Double and triple cone synchronizers feature hybrid as well as sintered bronze friction material. They are the same size as used in the TREMEC TR-6060 transmission. The greater the friction surface, the easier the transmission is to shift.
First and second gear synchros are triple cone while the remaining gears (including reverse) are double cone. The cone rings use what is referred to as a hybrid arrangement since one side uses a carbon friction material and the other side uses sintered bronze.

The TR-3160 also features a "reverse inhibiting solenoid" system that prevents shifting into reverse if the vehicle is moving forward at 3 mph or higher.

Same basic unit that has been being used in the Cadillac ATS-V. No idea how well it hold up to the additional power or if the issues with the remote shifter used on the MT82 will carry over to a different unit with a similar shifter design.

Its funny that this tranny is recommended by Tremec for use in industrial haulers and delivery vehicles as well as sports cars lol. I'm sure its pretty stout.
I believe this is also going to be used in some of the 2016 Camaro's.

If I were to come across a used manual tranny ats with this in it, and the gear ratios were close to the MT82 in our cars, I'd pay $1k for one from the salvage yard to try out, be a guinea pig for the community. All the ATS cars with manual transmissions have these and they have been applauded for shifting great. There are also ATS 2.0 guys making as much power/torque with mods as a GT does and have no issues with the tranny.

I'm sure the one for the GT350 has some proprietary stuff done that make it better suited for the car but a new one of these from tremec should be about $3k.

The MT-82 is/was used in the Transit van as well.

Most likely, Ford will lock up the parts and complete units meaning you will have to purchase them from Ford and not Tremec. They did the same thing with the 05-10 TR3650. Parts that interchanged with the older units were available from Tremec. Parts unique to the S197 unit were only available through Ford. New units were only available through Ford as well.

much of the complaints on the MT-82 stem from Fords implementation of the shifter/linkage... I can't understand why they wouldn't look at proven methods of shifter and linkage towers in use on other very reliable/stout/functional applications dating back to the early 90s that they are mimicking now in 2015! Supra turbo, 350-370 Zs & infiniti G35-37, M3 e46-e92, all had similar Getrag setups with towers mounted directly to tranny... this is exactly how the best aftermarket shifters are now being implemented, as they have created their own shift towers bolted to the transmission housing instead of floating to a grommet mount to the car body shift tunnel. The stock shifter is too disconnected mechanically from what it is supposed to be in control of...
The Blowfish bracket is another super heavy and robust version of the cast aluminum shift towers on the other mentioned vehicles, accomplishing what these other oem applications already did, creating a solid shift experience.

Reducing NVH was the reason for remote shifters. All of the current sporty cars on the market today have remote shifters AFAIK.

I've been looking into swapping in a 6070 for a while, maybe this is a better option.

The TR-3160 is still only rated for 295-405 ft lbs of input torque depending on the gear ratios chosen. Not a good choice for anyone building a boosted vehicle.
Its hard to believe some people make as much power with an MT82 as they do. Internal wise, they aren't very well supported in the middle of the gear train very well but quite a few people have had success with them holding up minus the shifting issues and the whine.
