Trans Lock out?

I ran the car hot and the trans locked me out of all gears. Is this a safety feature or I broke it? I let it cool off and it worked fine but a little stiffer getting into gears. When I start the car cold I hear marbles around the trans for 5 sec or so as I start her and go, then it goes away. any thoughts?
