You're caught up in a 120 mile round trip and pondering gears and a SC you're making the wrong choice in cars. That's just how that works. :shrug:Not much of a concern, but when I have to go to work (read not out just for fun), it's 60 miles 1 way (I ride my bikes in the summer, most of the time...) thought with a SC setup, 3.31 will have more a$$ to get it around and better MPG to boot. Not that MPG is a real concern, but figured if I could get a benefit from it then why not.
... Yeah I forgot about the brakes.
Matt, that pretty much covers it. A supercharger with lower gears 3.73 will just spin the tires on take off, so a higher gear 3.15 will help spread the torque for less chance of spinning the tires. Of course the added power of the supercharger could roast the tires whenever you floor it, so it still takes some soft pedaling to not roast the tires. So my understanding is that the 3.73, compared to 3.31 with same tranny gears, will give (1) more torque at the wheels, (2) lower top speed and (3) narrower range of rpms when driving. Am I missing something?
I disagree. The PP is worth it for the Torsen alone, the stock (weak) Traction-Lok diff is crap and will burn out quickly on a SC car.I don't like the 3.73 gear for street use. It's too short and neuters the speed range in the lower gears. I also think the PP suspension is crap - it's very harsh and yet very sloppy at the same time. The Torsen is completely unnecessary for street work - it's got nothing over the standard LSD and if anything it's worse in very low traction situations.
The Brembos kick ass and the PP wheels are pure sex and the K-brace is mandatory. If you want the brakes AND the PP wheels then it's a no-brainer.
So - If I were to do it again I'd might consider a base GT M6 with 3.31s or maybe 3.55s and then add the K-brace and suspension/wheels of my choice. Brakes, maybe.
Now - if you can find a PP at a deep discount then sure, but the gears are very short with the stock redline. You can always de-gear it - the complete LSD 3.55 pumpkin is $900 brand new. Sell the Torsen/3.73 for a profit.
60 mile one way is a very long commute. 3.73 gears will result in more engine noise at highway speed. The PP tires are summer tires, and they don't grip as well in the cold, and that tire size is more expensive to replace, and PP doesn't come with a spare. Not much of a concern, but when I have to go to work (read not out just for fun), it's 60 miles 1 way (I ride my bikes in the summer, most of the time...) thought with a SC setup, 3.31 will have more a$$ to get it around and better MPG to boot. This crossed my mind too... Figure I'll get a cheap set of rims online and winter tires, for when needed.60 mile one way is a very long commute. 3.73 gears will result in more engine noise at highway speed. In my opinion, contrary to my earlier comments, the highway cruising rpm with the 3.73s is very acceptable - I'd say even 'just right'. in fact, you can actually pass in 6th gear.... but just barely. I don't see much acceleration happening in 6th with a 3.31.60 mile one way is a very long commute. 3.73 gears will result in more engine noise at highway speed. Don't forget the Torsen diff too!Not much of a concern, but when I have to go to work (read not out just for fun), it's 60 miles 1 way (I ride my bikes in the summer, most of the time...) thought with a SC setup, 3.31 will have more a$$ to get it around and better MPG to boot.
