Yes that's what I'm going to do. So do I need a new tune once I go from the 160 to the 170?
I asked Lund this same question early in the week and they told me the tune was already tuned for a 170-175 stat...kind of strange, since I bought mine with the evenflo 160.

I would just confirm with them.

So I switched to the Reische 170 and I must say night and day difference. I wouldn't recommend it but if someone wants to go with the even flo I will be happy to sell you mine!

Is a tune necessary for the 170 or is it just better with a tune? Anyone running the 170 with no tune adjustment?

Is the differences in the temp have to do with pp and none pp cars? when I order my tune from beef he recommended the 160 so I when with it and I'm always at like 220, my car is none pp and I'm over here in south texas but we just got some really cold weather over here and the temp still get up to 220. I ask this because when I changes my stat most people where saying that it was because if the radiator size.

So im about to do the thermostat mod with a tune this week. Have to buy a hose clamp at Harbor Freight.

My question is, I've never changed one before. Where on the hose should i clamp? Close to the thermostat itself? Closer to the radiator? A little guidance would be very helpful.

I have a PP and had high temps with the 160 vs the 170 so I don't think the pp vs non pp is a factor.
Terry recommends the 160 because that is what he sells!! He his a really good guy and I highly recommend his service, but he does not sell the 170.

I just thought I'd make note. I have the even flo 160Âş T-stat and while cruising at 60mph, my head temp hovers between 200ÂşF and 215ÂşF; however when I go WOT it quickly drops to aprx 180ÂşF-185ÂşF.

Also I do have the P.P.

My head temps don't seem to correspond to outside temps at all. In 50ÂşF weather I cruise around 208ÂşF and WOT is around 182ÂşF. In 110ÂşF ambient temps, my head seems to be around 210ÂşF cruising, and around 184ÂşF at WOT.

Going up a steep hill cruising at 65mph I saw 230ÂşF, but a couple sec. of WOT (in 6th) and it dropped to about 200ÂşF.

With the 160Âş t-stat my WOT temps seem to be about give or take 30Âş cooler than when I'm just cruising....

This thread makes me think maybe I should swap T-stats.

So I took a long road trip this weekend and decided to take notice of my stock t-stat temps while cruising at 80 on the freeway. I held a steady 205 CHT with 800 miles of driving. The temp only varied about 2-4 degrees but was almost always at 205.

Once I get my Evenflo in I'll check again and see what kind of results I get.

I took my car with the Evenflo 160 stat to the gas station tonight for my 1st fill up of E85. It was 15 degrees outside and I drove it around for awhile so it could learn the new brew. I got home and let the car idle in the driveway while I swept some leaves out of the garage. I heard the stupid fan kick on! Head temp was 197 by the time I got back in it.

Unless you are WOT, the Evenflo just doesn't cool. I will be installing a Reische 170 in the spring.

I'm not sure if a clamp would work. As soon as you take the thermostat out of the housing, coolant will still pour out. Nowhere to clamp above it.

When I changed mine I used 3, large ziplock quart bags and caught all of it. Didn't need drain the radiator at all.

If you clamp the hose and use a ziplock under the Thermostat housing and quickly swap the Tstats you will only lose a very small amount of fluid. Your right you can't clamp the top but fluid will only come out when you pull the Tstat as soon as you swap the new one in it stops. Just be ready to do a quick swap and you will be fine.

I assume you mean 160 t stat? If so then yes, apparently there are many who are seeing stock-like temps with that one.

Sounds like it. I ordered a 170 from lethal the other day and will be returning the 160 one to Beefcake. I'm waiting to install it until I'm ready to load my Lund tune.
