Stereo base 4.3" head unit upgrade: Ideas? Plans?***

so, does the dealer do the work of changing the head unit?...do you have to order from the factory?...how does much does the dealer charge?

My dealer ordered the head unit through Ford by my vin. They used an outside audio guy for the install. The result looks and operates like it was there from the factory. I do not have pricing info, as it was included in my deal.

No connector i can think of. My brain goes straight to modified mini ssd board or ddr ram and corresponding sockets from a computer

I was thinking the same. It looks similar to 2 small pcie x1 connectors from a pc.

Quick search says most people solder cat5 cable straight to the pins. I know that wont work for what you are thinking. Maybe on the faceplate end, but i think some sort of chipboard is your ticket on the HU end

I think I see where you're heading with this... It might just be a matter of counting the number of connections and looking on Mouser or the like for a wiring harness that would work...

It has to be some type of industrial pc connection... So mouser would be a good place to look?

I just did a quick search and was a little overwhelmed by all the options. I only thought Mouser off the top of my head, but there must be somewhere that you could find generic wiring harnesses. Maybe somewhere that does circuit board printing.

From what I have found, these connectors are called "rack & panel connector plugs".


My idea would be to create a bezel that would house a pioneer AVH-4100NEX detachable screen. This screen would be mounted in front of the OEM circit board like the ebay unit. You would then have ribbon cables/connections going from the screen connections to the body of the 4100 mounted in the OEM headunit location.

Might also be a possibility of using the pioneer AVH-X7700BT.

Is something like that going to be Android Auto compatible, or is that system miles different than the direction you're going?

All of the pioneer headunits with their new NEX operating system have native support for android auto and apple carplay. It also supports siri eyes free for voice command.

What could be done to retain the use of the factory volume knobs and steering controls? I know there was an interface for this for the s197.

I would think any type of programmable steering wheel control interface would be able to handle it. The volume knobs should act just like steering wheel controls...

Having problems sourcing the connectors.... I found a site that sells them but they want $70 PER CONNECTOR... :eyebulge:
