Hello; I have heard that called a snake bite when it happens to a bicycle tire-rim. It is one rason I do not like nor want a very low profile shoulder tire. What happens is the tire hits a pothole of some such and the tire gets pinched against the rim. Both the tire and rim can be damaged. Not sure if it's the angle but wheel looks very slightly bent also.
Two summers ago, I was driving home from Morristown TN. There was a section of highway construction. The pavement had been ground away leaving an edge about two inches. I would slow way down before hitting that ridge. I noted a new Honda Civic on the shoulder with both front tires flat. Figure the driver did not slow down enough.
I get the curb rash bit with the extra thick sidewall rubber, but do not think that is what happened.
Probably best to keep the tire pressures on the higher side to help prevent this. Likely can still happen.
To the OP- Good call.
