It was a big deal with the early Mazdaspeed 3 engines. Low Speed Pre-Ignition it's called.
I don't believe it's that much of an issue with these engines and Adam? had mentioned that Ford has specific tables to control this?

Wow I owned a turbo Subaru for 5 years and never heard of this. Thanks for enlightening me guys. I'll just drop it in 5th anytime I wanna quickly pass on the highway from now on.
I'm almost never in 6th gear, even on the highway. Usually downshift to 4th at least.

I've owned many cars over the years (I'm 54, which I'm betting is well above the mean age here). With just about any car I've had, if you put a lot of load on the car in a low gear, you get spark knock. I'm guessing, and I'm no expert, that this is extenuated in the turbo/blown cars.

Do the NGK swap. If you going to check gap, might as well replace the plugs as labor is the same. It made a noticeable difference in my car, but as posters have said here, I'm rarely in 6th gear unless I'm on the highway. With the manumatic, it always downshifts anyways.

So, what about autos & LSPI? They should downshift automatically and mostly prevent this, right? I usually tap the DN paddle at least once when passing.

If you are on a Cobb AP tune, there are many LSPI safety factors put in place. Mostly revolving around load and timing compensations.

I put even more safety checks in place, and make it a non-issue for MT's and AT's.

If you are on a stock tune, or someone else's tune. Simply refrain from flooring it in high gears at low RPM. I always try to be above 3k before flooring it at ANY time.

I think this is the sound i am encountering instead of the sputtering noise i keep talking about when it happened to me the first time it blew spark plug #3 now i will always downshit when doing a pull it kinda sucks that we cant use that torque down low.

The 1200 rpm 6th gear at 45mph is what annoys me most on my car. Does it all the time on suburban type roads. The stock programming is ridiculous for the automatics- especially bad for a 3.15 diff. The whole car shudders and makes you hit the down paddle but then as soon as you let up on the gas at all, it shifts back up. My Ram did it too so I just drove it in tow mode around town. No option like that on the Mustang, though.

Yes, ALL 2015 Ford products with Sync will notify Ford through the Satellite that the ECU has had a program change. I thought this was pretty well known. So even if you return your program back to stock with whatever you've used, Cobb, SCT, etc., Ford will have a record of all the changes made to the ECU the instant it leaves the shop. I believe they even state this on the MyFord website. They claim it's for diagnostic purposes, etc.
The Sync system does not link up to a satellite. You must be thinking about the OnStar system on GM products.

This is what you guys are talking about. It's pretty awful. LSPI *shudders*

EDIT: just saw buhbuhj mentioned it. Nvm. But yeah, it's LSPI.
If I am cruising at a constant speed on level ground I will shift my manual into 6th at 45 MPH but the engine definitely 'lugs.' Anything below about 50 MPH and trying to accelerate causes lugging in 6th. I believe that is the 'rumble' that is being referred to. I am surprised this is happening in the automatic cars and it has been calibrated to go into 6th at this low of a speed.

Lugging is bad for engines.

As far as accelerating in 6th at 'highway speed'; ie: 55+, a downshift is not required. This powertrain pulls well from that speed point, even in 6th.

Adam, maybe you should make a new thread about Low Speed Pre-Ignition, explaining what happens and why you shouldn't pull in 6th gear on the highway. I have NEVER heard of not doing this ever, even on turbo cars when I was researching them. This sounds like something serious that should be avoided to me.

I usually go 70+ on the UK motorways in 6th gear. Not loading the motor, but maybe part throttle here and there just to pass. I don't think that's a problem. Getting thr AP v3 soon and some plugs.

So Adam, are you saying that with your tune it would be okay to use 6th gear at full throttle? If so you may have sold me. I don't mind downshifting but on long road trips it's nice to just leave it in 6th and let the torque do the work.

Although I love driving my car on long trips, I don't really want to downshift to pass someone especially if I'm already doing 70 so I just leave it in 6th and use the torque to pass.

Damn I really need an AccessPort and a tune from Adam.
