spark plug gap

I got NGK Ruthenium plugs for my car and the gap is .040 , but the car calls for .052 , so do i gap to the plug or the car

I gap mine to .040"". But I'm tuned and I like
the fuel a bit on the rich side.

.052" if you're bone stock to fire off them lean mixtures.

.040. Based on recommendations from some forum members I trust, I leave my NGK os is out of the box and car has never ran better. For retrospect, the 350 manual closed the gap from .052 to ~.040 in '19. I don't know of a reason that wouldn't be retroactive to all years.
