Id not fly out with out something in writing. It might work out but why take the risk?
You are making an assumption that I didn't have it in writing. I had a deal screen ahead of time and sent over all my info like driver's license, insurance, etc. so paperwork was already prepped when I arrived.

Fair enough but your post reads like you hopped on the plane based on a call

Close - based on text messages :)

My point was that this came together very quickly and buying a new car is not something I would consider risky. Due diligence is always wise but that process took about 30 minutes.

I'll have a full story up about the adventure once I finish writing it.

I ordered my car 9/11/15 from a dealer 1700 miles from me and put down a large deposit. No written guarantee and nothing but a couple email transactions, txt, and a receipt for the deposit.

Car showed up at the dealer in late Dec. 2015.
I wired the remaining amount, minus my deposit, the same day.

Car was transported and I had it in my driveway early Jan. 2016.

... and yes I was totally nervous the entire 3+ months.

To get straight to the point. That's what I did and don't regret it. My sales guy sent me vids and pics of the car. Financed through them but I did have to smog and pay for the CA state tax at time of registration.
Additional note: I was aware of the limp mode issue but I knew I wasnt going to track the car but I was worried of the limp mode during daily driving but no issues with 3k on the odo. Good luck.
which state you got your car from? I heard the dealers, depending on the state that they are in, will/can collect tax from the buyer and send it straight to their local DMV. Then that local DMV will transfer all the tax to CA DMV.

As we all know, different state has different tax rate on cars. This means, if the state that you purchased the car from, has a lower tax rate than CA, the dealer is suppose to send the buyer a Cashier Check (payable to CA DMV) for the difference.

Also, I learned that not all states are connected with CA DMV that allows/required the above-mentioned method for tax collection.

Thoughts?

Good to know. I was wondering about this too. I might be putting down a deposit for a 17 GT350 about 12hrs away today and was wondering how this process worked as well. Didn't know if people actually flew there just to look at it and then fly back home or what.

I'd prefer to not book a flight, personally, considering I can get pictures, videos, and written documentation that there's no issues, damage, etc. Posting here to see if someone could swing by and look at it would definitely be very helpful for me when the time comes.

Don't pay over MSRP for a 2016 Tech Pack car, unless you're hoping to get in on a class action law suit over the "limp mode" debacle.

2017's all now have the additional coolers so they won't fail on the track. Obviously Ford recognized their failure for the 2015-2016, and corrected it for 2017. 2015's don't really matter as most people are collecting those & not abusing them on a track.

A GT350 by definition is a super high performance car, with expensive 2-piece rotors, high RPM engine, etc.. (all track type things) so to have any version of the car FAIL (overheat) on a track is an issue that should be addressed with a recall or at the very least a disclaimer (and discount)!

And as far as buying a NEW car from a Ford dealer sight unseen, that should be no issue, especially a GT350 as almost every dealer put those in the showroom with ropes around them with the plastic wrappers left in place.

Some states will do that and issue you a temp tag from the state where the sale took place, good for X days. They handle the tax transfer, title and registration and the tags of your home state show up at your door. That's how it worked for me but my states share a border. Dmv.org seems to explain it well for each state.

I live in CA but purchased from NM. They collected all taxes and fees and will register for me. All I had to do was get a VIN verification done for them at the DMV to send in with the paperwork.

I am in the process of finalizing the deal. All via email, phone, and text.

16 AG Tech package w/blue stripes, 11 miles, for less than MSRP. More details when I know it's done.

Super stoked.

I have not heard of anyone getting a check, in that case why would you pay the dealer only to have them send you a check back?

I bought mine in Illinois which has sales tax sharing with CA. I paid Illinois tax, signed some form for the dealer, and then paid the delta when I registered the car.

But yes like others have mentioned, I bought mine out of state, did everything by phone/email and had the car shipped privately.

Agree they definitely should address the cooling issues for Tech Owners.

The last part is way off from what I have observed; the two dealerships that sell Shelby cars that I visited, there was 1 350 in the showroom, with the rest out sitting on the lot, and I'm talking like 7-8 of them.

OP: I put down a deposit on my R before it even got delivered to the dealer, which was out of province for me and about 1400 kms away. It helps to know whether the dealer is stand up or trustworthy such that if there are any issues, you be assured they will be sorted out. I dealt with MacPhee Ford myself, and honestly the only nervousness or anxiety I experienced was the wait for the car itself. Had no issues or worries at all with travelling so far to trade a car in on my R without ever seeing it in person.

I would certainly be looking for a deal though if I were you, 2016's are in great supply and with 17's being purchased for MSRP, I would be looking for a discount on a 16' Tech car. My $0.02. Good luck!

EDIT: Seems it took too long for me to post, get distracted sometimes :D Congrats man! Great to hear that you negotiated a deal as well, update with pictures and details when you can!

I wouldn't do it. After my last purchase experience, from here on, I won't commit to anything until I test drive it 1st!
