Hey guys, I need some feedback on my current situation.

Bought my Mustang GT Base Dec 2014.

Hit 18k miles this weekend and while changing the cabin air filter I noticed the rust in the image attached. This was under the glove box.

Couple of questions:
1. What could have caused it?
2. Is this common in this location.
3. Took it to a dealership this morning. Service person looked surprised. Said nothing could be done. No warranty no nothing. In you all's opinion is there something that can be done. I thought it would be covered by warranty. I was thinking of showing it to another dealership (place were it was bought).

Any feedback or thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks

If attachment is not working, let me know. I don't usually post any images. Hope i did it right.

Nothing to worry about, its an unpainted piece of steel. This process is called "weathering". Take a look at your brake rotors or drive-shaft, both will have the same effect.

It's rusting because it's bare steel. It's not coated with anything. Rub some oil on it and go driving and forget it

Ford is notorious for not painting interior steel that is not otherwise visable. Although it's unsightly, it's nothing to worry about - my 35 year old Fox-body dash structure looks just like that. It shouldn't ever degrade to the point of structrual weakness.

Its not how I would do it, but I am not in the business and science of profitable mass production.

moisture from humidity is all it takes to begin the rust process.

I take cars apart all the time for car stereos and see this... all the time. Ford is no more notorious for this than even Honda or Toyota, the two favorite children of the Japanese God of Reliability.

When oxygen touches steel, mixed with the humidity in the air... you get that. It is nothing to worry about and nothing you'll see unless you go looking.

And literally one or two wipes of a green 3M pad and its gone.

It's surface rust. Once it's there it will not continue to rust unless scrapped off. Happens to bare metal a lot.

i hear you. i remember pulling out the center console on my old civic and the entire metal superstructure underneath had this sort of surface rust on it. for me, it wiped off using CLR. not sure if it will work on this though. unless you paint it (or coat it with something), it's just going to come back.
