Hi ther i actually just signed up so i could ask a few questions about a 2016 mustang gt i just purchased that has tons of upgrades but unfortunately i have to get it smogged & i live in California. I am dropping it off this morning to have the stock exhaust manifolds put back on but it also has a gt350 im, tb & 47lb injectors, but i need to return the tune to stock because it has the monitors turned of for oxygen sensors & catalytic converter. Also the car did not come with whatever device they used to load whatever tune is on it. I do have a sct livewire ts+ & was wondering if anyone knows if its possible to use the sct i have & save the current tune as the stock file so i might be able to use it after i get it smogged? If the sct wont work since the car already has a tune & i end up having to have the dealer flash it back to stock will i need a stock throttle body? Or will i need to get a custom tune that has all the monitors on but will work with the im, tb & injectors? Srry for the bad punctuation but i would very much appreciate any advice i can get

Law in California is that the seller must smog the vehicle, unless other arrangements were made…

KeithS pretty much nailed it. The seller was responsible for smogging the car for you. However, if it wasn't, then yes you would have to return it to stock to smog. Keep in mind that Ford Performance offered a kit that was smog legal in Cali as a Power Pack 3. Are you sure this is not what you have? Other than the 47lb injectors its pretty much this kit. If its not, it would be cheaper to probably just buy this kit keep the GT350IM on along with the TB and CAI and just install the software which is smog legal. The 47lb injectors sounds like the previous owner was running E85. You can sell the GT350IM and the throttle body separately and recoup some of the costs. I live in Cali, you are more than welcome to contact me for advice via PM and you can even call me.

This kit can be had for quite a bit less.

First off thank u very much for the help! I know the previous owner was responsible for the smog but i got a pretty good deal on the car because it wasnt able to pass smog. Im not sure exactly what kit or if it was a kit they installed but the monitors for the cat & o2 sensors are turned off so its definitely not smog legal here in ca. Do u guys or anyone happen to know if its possible to use the sct livewire to load a tune if it already had a tune? & if so will it save the custom tune thats on it now as a stock tune? Or if not & i have to have a dealer flash it back to stock will it run ok with the gt350 im, tb & injectors? This is the car i just got it down in Sacramento last Sunday maybe someone out there will recognize it & know who owned it or what tuner they may have used?

Intake manifold I wouldn't worry about, or the LU47's.
But if it was a CAT delete that's gonna be expensive,
Doesn't matter what tune is in it, as long as it didn't
turn of any emission equipment. Rear O2, EVAP, etc.

WH, in Cali as long as there is a tune on it that doesn't have a CARB # it won't pass even with the readiness codes all green, they have software that can tell if its the original or OEM software. Thats why the CARB EO# is so important. Thats why I went with the Ford Performance Power kit for my 2020 Mustang.

To the OP, if the original owner doesn't have the tuning device with the stored OEM tune you will have to take it to a dealer and have the original tune installed. You will have to put on the OEM headers and cats. I would then consider the Ford Performance STG 3 Powerkit I showed, as it will tie in the GT350IM, the TB and the CAI to run with a CARB legal tune from Ford. I know you already have this installed, but you could probably sell the new GT350IM and TB separately and recoup some of your cost. The car won't run right with the OEM software and that TB and will kick off codes. Any codes you can't get a pass other than for EVAP canister to get a go on smog. After that is all done you have to start the drive cycle to get all the readiness codes to go green, this can take a few days. I knocked it out in 2-3 days of driving within the cycle.

A good read...BTW Livernois may have a smog legal tune for this setup. I would call and ask. They offer CARB EO# tunes.

Cali checks for tunes

Thank u! I dropped the car off this morning to get the stock exhaust manifolds & cats put back on thankfully they were in the trunk when i bought it. I actually buy a lot of vehicles that cant pass smog & get them to pass & sell them although i am not too familiar with these mustangs but my current daily driver is a 2014 f150 with a 5.0 & i have smogged it with it tuned? Are these mustangs somehow different? As far as i know as long as the tune doesnt turn off the monitors & they are all set to ready & there are no cel's then it should pass? I guess i just need to get a custom tune that will work with the stuff im leaving on the car & see if my sct livewire will let me load it even though it already has a tune? & if it does ill just give it a try & see what happens?

So i got the car back from the exhaust shop today & it actually sounds killer to me anyway & isnt way too loud like it was but im wondering if its ok to drive it before i get the tune revised. I noticed the air/fuel gauge on the dash shows about the same at idle & normal driving but seems to be a lil higher if i get on it? Besides possibly ruining the cats i just put back on can i hurt anything buy driving it for a few days? I just ordered a new tune for it today but not sure how long until i get it. The afr looked like it was going to be up in the 10s if i got on it at all & i read that the higher the num the more lean it is & obviously i dont want to hurt anything? I do have bigger injectors & e85 tune if that makes any diff? I tried not to get on it too much but the lil i did the car still feels as quick as it was before?

AFR in the 10's is not lean at all. 10's on 93 octane is rich.
