I think that may be a little off. The raxiom unit for the S197 is only $699.

While the $699 for the S197 is true, and I bought one for my daughters 2012, the S197 crowd had options for an aftermarket stereo. You could buy the dash trim piece. Considering all parts for the S550 are at least 10-15% more, no other option in stereos, the Jeep price, I would be surprised if it is less.

I do think it is still a good buy.

The Tomtop unit is a great unit except for temp display in C rather than F (fix being worked on for it). It only cost $300, is plug and play and some others have purchased additional hardware to gain screen mirroring capabilities.

If this new unit comes in at anywhere near $750 it really needs to have something that realllllly sets it in a completely different class than the Tomptop unit. If it is $500 and completely bug free and plug and play using all factory connections... that would be worth it in my opinion. If it comes in at $750, I don't know why anyone would pay an additional $450 for a very similar product only to have the temp display when everyone is carrying a smart phone that has access to temp.

I think charging a bit more for this product (if it actually ends up using that Rosen system pictured for the hardware) is probably worth it, given that this achieves a far-better 'factory' look than the S197 kits, with their extra-large frame around the screen. Of course, make a few mistakes with a kit like this, or others, and you could easily end up spending the difference between a base and a premium model Mustang to put everything back together again, or to achieve a desired perfection.

And as far as I'm concerned, the only issues I've had with the Taobao unit I bought a few months ago (which looks strikingly similar to that unit pictured here) are just minor software glitches. As far as I know, the unit I bought could have been a prototype with just some incomplete software for demo purposes--it sure feels like it in some spots. Regrettably I'll probably be tossing the darned thing once the Raxiom-branded one comes out, provided the software issues are hammered out (or at the very least, the ability to update the software and the company actually making good on follow-up updates comes true.)

I'm still very curious to see what solution is provided for dealing with that black plastic panel that seals up the factory radio, which we've all had to cut up to get our aftermarket kits to line up. I can't imagine the instructions would literally have you cut that thing up--I'd pay a premium if it just included a new cover with the provisions made already for housing the circuit board.

I think expecting something like satellite radio or Android Auto/Apple Car Play integration is a nice thing to dream about--I certainly would love it--but I'm sure there is a brick wall of licensing and other issues that very easily prevent it from being a reasonable item in terms of cost. Not to mention you need to then basically completely ignore the Sync unit (for better or worse as you'd need to pair the device with the aftermarket unit itself, meaning it would then need its own Bluetooth setup. I think that could work. But I just don't see it happening for around one grand.

Is yours the same as the Tomptop? Where is the link to yours? I know with the Tomptop, some early adopters had an older firmware version that wasn't as polished as the newer firmware versions that everyone is now receiving from Tomptop.

Not an option as of now.. no kits available.. it took a few years for there to be one for the s197 mustangs.. and the nicest one didn't come until almost the end of that mustang...

The Raxiom unit is basically an Integrated tom-tom.. it uses all the factory parts.. just replaces the bezel and screen.. same as the unit for the 197 mustangs

I don't mind the base screen at all, I hate touch screens in cars in general. One of the main reasons I didn't waste money on the premium.

I do however hate the sync software with a bloody passion. I'd be willing to deal with a touch screen at this point if it meant getting rid of sync (I really do hate sync that much) but it doesn't sound like anything is replacing sync just yet.

All these screens are doing is polishing a turd...

Most likely after them stating they won't be sourcing these form Rosen they will be using Toptom or the other one.. and they will just have better more robust software.. they will do what your recommending.. it will be more money though.. I would say 799-899 range.. you also have to remember they give a two year warranty and that cost money .. and support that will be much better.. so if there are bugs they hopefully will get faster resolution..


I doubt they are starting from scratch.. especially at the price point they need to be at.. much more economical to just tweak an existing unit..

I am glad they aren't working with rosen on this endeavor

I only wanted the larger screen for two reasons: 1. Back up camera looks a lot better on the larger screen. 2. (I didn't realize this until after it was installed) Makes the cab look much better in general. The small screen just gives a very "cheap" appearance.

I will say I am not fond of touch screens, either. However between voice commands and the physical directional buttons below the screen, you can still navigate to the majority (and important) functions without having to actually touch the screen.

I don't really use GPS so it was an added bonus that this upgrade came with it but not needed for me. I know in the other threads people were praising how good the nav was and some other minor issues with it that may have been addressed by just changing some settings around.

Both your link and video aren't coming through. I think I remember reading your thread -- was yours all in Chinese? Or at least the bluetooth functions? If so, you may want to consider spending the $300 on the Tomptop. Although, with this new unit possibly being announced soon, obviously you should wait.
