Ever wonder why you’ve had fun up until a certain point on a track? This is why.
Jay puts into words what most of us feel. Most don’t have the DNA for “racing”. I’ve known many a motorcycle racer and they are just another breed. I’ve known a few who think they are yet soon discover they are not.
With age comes wisdom 😉

Mods…Please put this where it belongs if not here. Obviously not GT350 specific but this is where I spend my time on this forum.

Motorcycle racers have to have such a disregard for their own safety. I took my bike to a track a few times and nope.

Never been on a road race course with any of my bikes. Those guys are nutz. Seen a few MotoGP races in person and let me tell you…just krazy!!
We’d rip it up in the desert with bikes but we all just rode at our own pace.
Super Moto, motocross racing etc just never appealed to me. If I’m injured, I don’t work. Self-employed since the age of 21 so it never attracted me.
Hitting the track with the GT350 really appeals to me but not racing.

I take my bikes to the track often. But we "race" for fun. No trophies to win at track days. And I'm ok with that. 😊

There is a guy on this forum who claims he races his GT500 on this forum driving HPDE events.

There is something to the quote to what Jay says. Over the hump beyond middle aged people don't go out and buy a race car and race with people who do it for a living. I do, but I don't call it racing.

One of my favorite Jay Leno quotes about racing was in "Love the Beast" with Eric Bana.

In talking about enjoying cars, driving, and such, but why he doesn't race them, he drew this parallel -

"I like sex, but I don't want to be a porn star." - Jay Leno

A fellow Shelby owner and a local club road-racer here. It's a lot of fun, the most fun I've ever had, and yes it is dangerous. All of us gridding up at evey race do realize that there's a small, but non-zero chance of serious injury or even death. But we still race. I do not consider myself another breed. I do not consider myself to be crazy or disregarding of safety either. I do have the best gear I can afford to mitigate risks as much as possible. I do invest in instruction and education to make sure I go fast but as safely as possible. In the end, it's a calculated risk, which I understand many people calculate differently. But to suggest that we're nuts in the sense that we're not aware of risks, or that we're under the illusion that we're different breed, is not true.

P.S. As someone else said, allegedly McQueen, racing is life, everything else is waiting.

I was always hoping Ford would setup a spec racing series for the modern day Shelby GT350 to develop future road racers. If all the cars are essentially the same there would not have to be performance adjustments to make each car competitive. Remember when Ford did have the Mustang spec series a few years ago ?

No crazy person ever referred to themselves as crazy 😜
Did you ever see Valentino Rossis reaction to witnessing an Isle of Man motorcycle race? He thought they were nuts.
I guess it’s just a matter of perspective.

I watch Isle of Man every year. I saw that with Rossi, and for clarification. They are nuts! There is NOO room for error on that course. And when you consider the amount of time they are out each time it’s absolutely amazing more aren’t injured or killed. Talk about precision riding.

I used to race WERA and CCS. It’s fun but yes very dangerous, especially the 600cc super stock class with two grids of 24 motorcycles all on one track together….it’s carnage actually, that’s why they won’t start a race unless they have two meat wagons present.
