Question about pp option vs base

A f*cktard's (me, not you) guide for whether or not to buy the PP:

1. Do you intend to replace most of the components listed in the PP with better aftermarket pieces?

If yes, don't buy the PP. If no, continue:

2. Are you a cheap ass who wants the lowest purchase price possible and can live with the base model parts?

If yes, don't buy the PP. If no, continue:

3. Do you intend to build a drag car, and specifically want the gear ratios and lighter weight of the base model for this purpose?

If yes, don't buy the PP. If no, buy the PP.

yea, want to build a street\track car. Not 100% drag though. want to bang corners too.

Performance Pack is for you, then, unless you intend to swap out most of those parts with superior aftermarket parts.

I'm guessing the MT82 costs less? I could be wrong.

If my transmission goes for whatever reason. I'll be replacing it with a 6060. Friends have bought re-furb'd ones from a shop in Michigan and have had no issues so far. Also quite the savings over a new one.

I'm sure the M82 was a cost issue. My 15 PP, witch is SC'ed with the M82 is no comparison to the Tremec in my 350,,,,, but. The M82 is a good trany, a little rough, kinda notchy and quirky. But it works. Auto's have there place and guys that like them for many reasons, just don't let them tell you the M82 is junk. I guess for me while driving it just fulfills the driving experience! I can't see going back to tell the guys how I was rolling through those "paddle shifters" on that great drive I just had. Just my opinion

I give props to Ford for sticking to their guns and doing manual-only performance models. They obviously lose a certain number of sales but shows they believe keeping the manual transmission viable is worth it. Some Ferrari models, 550 Maranello for example, had so few manual takers that the few manual cars that were made are valued considerably higher. To each his own but unless you are drag racing for money, a few tenths of a second is fairly meaningless.

You'll have to go 3.73 gears if you get the PP, which most people consider too much gear if you're blown. Traction is often a problem. The majority will tell you to get 3.15 gears if you are installing a supercharger, but I know there are some around here with the PP and a blower.

Ha!..I wish traction was a problem..have yet to accomplish a "mash it to the floor burnout" with my PP Gt. Even with "all" traction control off.. Awesome traction with the stock 19" rubber too. And to me the 3.73 is a perfect gear..start in 2nd, run the rpm's up then shift to 4th. Then on to 6th if getting to highway speed or to 5th if you racing..The 5.0 coyote loves to rev!. Damn fast car if you skip the extra shifts!

Yea, it's a shame we can't have an honest discussion on this board without the pissing matches, but many of the manual guys around here are very defensive about their transmission.

I don't think is a manliness thing, I just think most guys that bought the performance pack did for the same reason I did. It's the driving experience! 99% of the time our cars are driven on the street and the manual just heightens the driving experience. I , personally just don't find the fun of paddle shifters.
If I had a dedicated 1/4 mile track car maybe a different story. I assume the 10 speed auto to be coming out in the next year or two and I still bet most of us that like the manual will stick with it, again because of the driving experience and how it engages you while rolling through the gears, chirping tires between shifts and down shifting hard into those turns. You just don't get that with an auto.

Ok I'll start, lol. Just kidding, I don't care what people have. My MT-82 drives fine for me, tooling around. I wouldn't want to try and drag race with it on a regular basis. (That's best left to the auto anyway) In stock form it was a bit clunky but with the tweaks I've done it is so much better. Having a manual added a fun dimension to the car, in that I can practice rev matching downshifts and gear selection. On top of that I like to hear the Borlas talking back when I let off the gas. I just find it more engaging, personally. For sitting in traffic all the time an auto would be a smarter, more comfortable choice.

Nah, in all seriousness, who gives a rats ass what transmission you pick. I wanted a manual because... I did. But if you want an automatic, that's your business. I don't care. Don't really know why folks get so uptight about the transmission choice...

Hell, in Europe everybody knows how to drive stick. Even most of the women. It's no big deal there. So it's not a manliness thing.

I went performance pack after driving the three different variations (Base, Premium, PP). Here is why I went PP.


1. Wheels alone. Rim. Color combination. I just thought it was a perfect fit.

2. The brakes. The brakes. The brakes.

3. It hits corners better, more flat. Is it absolutely a handling machine? No. Unfortunately the immense weight won't allow it to be. That being said, big difference over the base.


I won't ever track this car. I do a lot of highway driving, but also live around a lot of sweeping, canyon carving back roads. I opened it up a bit last night (not breaking the 4k barrier) and it pushes quite a bit. It handles so well. The base felt almost teetering to me. The premium benefits were absolutely awesome. Mostly the sound system and head unit, which I plan on buying out of pocket for less than 1k. Heated seats? Yeah, I'll miss them. The cooling seats Ford doesn't get quite right.


Just my two cents.

Car and Driver had an early article on the S550 and their "car of choice":
- Base GT in Guard Metallic (not exactly DHG but as close to Bullitt green as you can get)
- Performance Package
- Recaro Seats
- Rear Park Assist
I ordered mine exactly the same except for the rear parking sensors (didn't feel the need and the sensors aren't a good look on the rear bumper IMO).
