WOW.... Honestly, as a product, it is good they have information on proper use, but as a car, the driver should competently know how to drive a manual car before they receive their license allowing them to do so...

I bought my second car with a manual trans for the purpose of teaching myself how to drive a manual. I think there far more important aspects of driving than knowing how to manually shift gears, like checking your blind spot and using turn signals.

You would be surprised at how many bought a mt in 05-06 that had never driven one.

I made sure my daughter's first car was a manual. No child of mine is going to be ignorant.

not being a parent.

i say this, if she also has changing a tire covered you are an excellent parent. and as you have covered these parameters, i bet you have all the other common sense stuff under control.

you should write a book to help others. i work with people in there late teens. they really need the help.

beers

In high school (yeah, I can remember back that far) there were honor students sitting out in the parking lot with a set of jumper cables and didn't have a clue what to do with them.

Book smarts only get you so far in life.

My daughter gets good grades as well, but I do try to teach her how to be self sufficient, and changing ones tire as well as how to jump a car properly definitely are on the list. I'll probably miss something though, but she knows my number. :)

Here you get either a manual or automatic license. If you didn't pass your test in a manual, you don't get a manual license and can't legally drive one on the road. Being competent in the fundamental motion controls of the vehicle is the first thing you learn, before you encounter any traffic and need to start consider checking mirrors, blind-spots and indicating, etc.

A common thing I have seen learners do is to panic when the car starts lurching due to too much clutch and too little throttle when taking off and mash the go pedal. That is something that being aware that there is a car right in front of you won't help. Also stalling whilst taking off and having the car behind you bang into you is something that knowing there is someone behind you won't help. Sure this is their fault, and having L plates helps others be aware that your driving might be erratic, but it still happens, and I imagine it would happen more-so without the L plates.

I guess the point I'm coming to is being able to make a decision without having the control to guarantee the execution of it is not much better than not making the decision.

I just can't see the California Department of Motor Vehicles being that competent. Good for you all, Down Under!

This reminds me when I was driving home my '13 mustang for the first time. I learned to drive with a manual car at age 16, then I didn't drive a manual again until 16 years later. To make things worse the wheel was on the other side, so I was used to shifting with my left hand instead of my right.

lol, it was one jerky ride home, stalled twice and accidentally did a burnout leaving a stop light. :D
