Hey yall If you check your ford app apparently we have a recall for 2018-2023 mustangs regarding the power steering CM.

I was wondering how would I go through with this considering I am Lund tuned. Ive heard I can go back to stock to have them flash it for the recall but I have deleted the IMRC so my tune is for IMRC delete 91/93.

what would you guys do

Has anyone done this recall with a tune?

My guess is, if the PCM has to be accessed, updated or reflashed for the EPAS module recall, a Ford Service Center may not do it to a tuned vehicle due to liability reasons, the possibility of bricking the PCM, etc….

Any time the PCM has been “tuned” Ford is aware via the logged “key counts”…. and any tune to a PCM is considered “tampering” by Ford and they won’t cover any repairs under warranty. Even though it’s a recall and they have to do recall repairs I think those with tuned PCM’s are going to have difficulty getting the recall done OR you’re going to end up paying out of pocket costs for what would be a free repair.

You can try calling a random Service Center and posing the question to see what kind of response you may get….

They can't deny what amount to basically a safety issue (steering) because your tuned.

Maybe flash to stock, call their mobile tech to come to you, and then flash back to your tune? That way you dont have to drive it. Pain in the ass...

Agree - and hear you on that - because a recall is a mandated NHTSA action that Dealers need to abide by…

HOWEVER, if in the Ford instructions the PCM has to be accessed or flashed due to the EPAS module recall, and the owner of the vehicle did not inform the Service Center the car is tuned - the Tech will try to reflash and either end up with:
- a bricked PCM
- a vehicle that now won’t run right after a stock reflash IF it has other mods (even as simple as a dumb JLT cold air intake)
- won’t be able to do a reflash because the Tuner “locked” their tune….

In no way am I arguing that the recall has a relation to a Tune - it does not - what I am saying is you have to look at the big picture…. These vehicles are not like those of 15-25 years ago where you just pull a chip out of the PCM and no one knew it was ever “tuned”….

Ford, through its internal channels has made Dealerships and their Service Centers aware of what to look for when it comes to warranty work and PCM reflashes. In some of the older Ford docs I have posted on here, IF there is a finding of PCM tampering OR that modules have been added to a vehicle that never had them “As Built”, the Owner of the vehicle will be responsible for the cost of the repair.

I’m just giving a heads up to the initial question posed RE: if PCM has a tune….

If the NHTSA doc from Ford shows in the instructions that the PCM has to be accessed or flashed for the recall - then anyone with a tune SHOULD BE concerned as to how they want to proceed. Maybe if they have a good rapport with their Service Center they can inquire to let others know what to expect…

I personally don’t care what anyone does with their vehicles as far as mods or tunes. I’m just putting it out there for what to expect IF tuned so that no one gets “whammied” when the Service Center calls and says they can’t do the recall or because of a tune that was not discussed there’s now other operating issues and possible out of pocket costs to the owner…. Dealership labor hours aren’t cheap and can be a detriment to someone who thought they could get a recall done for free - but are now on the hook because of their tune.

If the recall is strictly a parts swap and module interaction with just the EPAS unit and does not require ANY PCM interaction, then sure there isn’t any reason for concern….
