A week ago, I took my 21 GT to a local Ford dealer (Aus) to get the BCM updated for recall 23C35, along with the 30k scheduled service.

A day or so later, I got a call from them, saying I had to bring my car back in. The wording they left in the voicemail is that they have to "ground" my car. That wasn't happening, and I told them I was still using the car.

She said they went to claim the recall against my car in the system, and got rejected, as they have to also replace a part as part of the recall. I think she said the brake master cylinder. I found this a bit weird, as this would have been part of the instructions when they carried out the BCM update.

I've also checked many other websites for 23C35, and NONE of them mention any hardware update, just the BCM software update. So I'm wondering if they've messed up, saying they did the update, but they didn't do it at all, and are using the "part replacement" as a reason for me to bring the car back in.

This would make sense, as they've told me the update is done, and if by some rare chance the brake fluid DID go low and cause an accident, they'd be up shit creek, as they hadn't actually done the update.

I called them this morning, asking about how long it would take, and she looked my car up in the system, and said "oh that's in for the BCM update". So it's listed in the booking as BCM update, only adding fuel to the fire.

Has anyone seen or heard of a part being replaced for 23C35? I'd love to work out what's going on. Are they lying to me, or does this part really need replaced?

There's no hardware aspect, it's just an incorrect software parameter. They were probably just confused or relayed it incorrectly to you. I wasn't even aware the fix was out yet, so that also may have something to do with it.

The last official word we had: Ford expected to have a fix in December of 2023.

From the recall notice, it reads like a software update will be required. No hardware changes.

Dealers in-general like to hold cars involving safety recalls, but from Ford's own notice, we're being told to wait until a fix is created, tested and approved.

Whatever your Dealer is tracking off of, I'd ask for a copy of that document and a quick discussion to clarify.

From the attached notice:

"IMPORTANT: Dealers should open a Repair Order (RO) only when a full dealer bulletin is published. Opening an RO against an Awareness or Advance Notice will result in warranty rejections against a recall."

So you're saying it's not been released yet? Maybe it differs by region. I know when I log into my Ford account, it does (did) show my car as needing the recall done. But after the service and supposed BCM update, it no longers show up.

Also, yea, she definitely said it needs to come back for a hardware change too as part of the recall, the master cylinder. This is what raised a flag, as I know it has no hardware component.

I'll press them for the truth when I drop the car off on Tuesday. Something clearly isn't right here.

Possibly, I know there's no fix available in the US at least.

Writing from Australia I can relate to dealer confusion over recalls. I booked my car in for a recall over the reversing camera cable 8+ weeks ago, assuming this would be enough time to organise parts (& return from overseas holiday).
Car went in on Friday, call came in to collect car in the afternoon to be told, when collecting they advised the need for the recall to be done & I'll be called when the parts are in :headbang:
BTW I'm certain the camera cabling was repaired under warranty 3 years ago.....

Do you think she saw BCM and mistook it as shorthand for "brake master cylinder" - BMC? Or maybe someone even wrote/typed it into the system incorrectly? Just a theory.

Ok, so I took the car to Ford today, and was told they are grounding all 20-23 Mustangs. The fix also includes a part swap. And there are no parts in the country, great.

So they've given me a hire car, as they don't know when parts will be available.

If I want to get my car back in the meantime, I need to sign a waiver, waving Ford of any liability, in the event something happens. Given it's only the low fluid warning light, I'm tempted to do that.

I'm still seeing nothing about this part swap anywhere online, which is annoying.

Your situation is a bit unexpected, but not unusual. I experienced a brief delay of a few days with Toyota. Anything safety-related, the car is impounded until repairs are complete.

Ford AU 🇦🇺 might have more insight than we do. Could also be as AU 🇦🇺 cars are RHD, the chipset and software might be different, requiring a mechanical change. We're in hover mode until December.

It's great they gave you a loaner. I suspect after a few more vehicles are captured, they won't be able to do that for everyone.

Thanks for the update. :like:

So the dealer is confiscating your vehicle indefinitely in order to avoid liability? Wow. That wouldn't last very long if it were me.

Ditto on Crazy Hippie’s comment. Not going to confiscate my property. I am a big boy and understand liability. I most likely will not drive it if I am reasonably convinced that it is not safe. But I am not going to allow the dealer to confiscate my car.

Body Control Module (BCM) configuration update. It's just a software upgrade.

No kidding, really? 🙄 Did you see where I suggested the person who called the OP may have been mistaken...?

Put a mark on the MC itself, not the reservoir. Then when you get the car back you will know if it was changed.
