Performance Package Pitfalls

Woke up this morning to a flat rear P-Zero. Fortunately I was in the garage so I'm not complaining about that. It seems idiotic that a car is designed and manufactured with no spare provided- only an electric pump and patch kit. From what I've been told the small pump and patch kit leave much to be desired. My question is simple - is there any fix for this? Does anyone provide an alternative to the patch kit?

Was the same story on my '14 GT with the track pack. You can most likely pick up the jack and tiretool at a junkyard (or from someone selling theirs to get rid of weight) - I can't remember which tire and wheel they ended up using but it didn't quite fit in the spare tire hole (since it needs to be either a 19" wheel or one of a small number of 18" wheels that will clear the front brake calipers.

Was thinking maybe I go buy a used PP rear wheel and a used tire - mount it and throw it in the trunk. Trouble with that is what happens if the flat is up front?

I think you'd be safer with a front wheel that way it fits either.

this is true. it's just going to be used temporary to get you from where you don't want to be, to somewhere that can get you going and you wouldn't have to worry about the plug or even a small donut spare. On an older car that I had I bought a small size jack that fit right on the side in the trunk because I hate the scissor jack and bought a 18x8 that would fit both front and rear. I called Tire Rack to check if the front PP wheel 19 X 9 can be used temporarily in the back 19 X 9.5. They were very quick to "not recommend doing that" apparently the offset is at issue. This is truly a pain in the ass - something that can be serious at the wrong time in the wrong place. I guess it is what it is.

I was under the impression that with the torsen rear dif it was ok to run a different size in an emergency situation. At least thats what I read in the ausi thread about the same issue here:

Uhh, have you taken the time to see if the 19 x 9 will fit or are you just taking their word? You know they don't go around testing things like that. I'm thinking the reverse might not work because of the need to clear the Brembo caliper. But front to rear should be an easy fit. Just think it thru, without the brembos all the 19 x 9s on non PP cars are square fitment.

Thats right, but thats not his issue. He wants to put the front PP wheel on the rear as a temp spare.

Front PP wheel should fit on the rear IIRC.

A PP wheel will fit in the trunk well, but its wide and sits taller in the wheel well than the normal floorboard, so you'll loose some trunk space. A rear wheel would fit on the front, but it would require a spacer (and has the same problem being too wide to hide under the floorboard.

The optional Ford spare tire will fit correctly in the trunk, but it would only work for rear-tire flats (won't clear the brembo caliber on the front). OTOH, if you have the right spacer for the front, then in the event of a front wheel flat, you could swap a good rear wheel to the front (with a spacer) and put the spare on the rear.

Some guys are looking at buying a cheap wheel that fits over the front brakes, and then having the wheel modified and narrowed to like 7" wide and sourcing a compatible tire. A roll-your-own spare.

I honestly don't know why Ford doesn't provide a properly sized narrow spare tire as an option for the PP cars, especially at our own cost. Its completely possible, maybe they'll do it for the '18s or '19s.

Yes it's a pain, but use the roadside assistance and AAA after that.

That's probably just somebody covering their ass with a generalized statement for liability. The difference on PP staggered setups is minor (27.0" tire diameter vs 27.7" diameter - only 2.3%). I mean you can get a Torsen and a rear-spare tire from Ford for other packages, and its not exactly the same size, so I'm not buying the argument that a 2% difference in circumference is going to destroy your torsen, but I'll let somebody else be the guinea pig
