In the UK it's about £4.60 a gallon so $5.70 dollars a gallon. Petrol is too cheap in the US, need to put some taxes on it!

No reason now not to swap out the 3.73s for 4.56s

In Utah I haven't seen any significant price drops for 91 yet, I'm still paying like $2.40 a gallon.

I've never see negative numbers before on the Stock Market.
Crazy times folks, crazy times.

I paid $2.89 a gallon for 93 octane from Mobil this morning.
I haven't seen the Mobil gas prices drop yet. I've seen other gas stations drop prices, but not Mobil so much.

As a refiner, I can promise there is still a huge cost that comes with converting that free oil to gasoline.

Oh for sure, the equipment alone has an astronomical cost. Distillation and logistics to the pump is a long and expensive process. I just thought it was interesting that my state hasn't seen the level of decrease that other places has, in fact not much of one at all for 91 compared to the last 2 years. Especially given we have 4 local refineries. Marathon is spending quite a bit of money upgrading theirs at the moment.

the problem is the CME violated one of the absolute truisms of markets, that one's losses have a finite limit. When zero is the floor, you know with certainty the worst case scenario. But now your losses approach infinite. How is that supposed to attract investors and facilitate trade? I think it's sacrilege that anyone who doesn't produce an item, or own storage facilities (no renting doesn't count unless you can prove up the sum-total of your storage under contract is less than the positions you have open), or consume it is allowed to transact in commodity futures.

So,....the refiners are losing big monies then, I assume??
Yes and no. Refiners are getting paid to take crude. Problem is they can't move the refined products - low demand, and those storage tanks are 'full' too. So the ones really taking it in the shorts are the speculators, though producers aren't immune which means they have to turn off their wells. Not such an easy thing to do. And it's not exactly free to turn them back on.

You can't just roll commodity contracts - you HAVE to stand for delivery, so the holder of the contract promised to take delivery of 1,000 U.S. barrels (42,000 gallons) worth of crude and as much as he deserves to have it all dumped on his house and a giant pit that he gets to clean up and suffer the millions in EPA pollution fines, that doesn't actually happen. (though if you look thru news reports, people have literally had hundreds of bushels of corn dumped on their front lawns)

So you get nonsense like tankers being rented, pumped full and just left to sit at anchor for however long it takes to sell the cargo for a profit - assuming that ever happens. The people who lost their ass are in the main speculators who never intended to stand for delivery. They were passing paper between themselves hiking the price ever higher till they were able to sell the contract to someone who actually has a use for the oil.

So at negative $40/barrel the scum of the earth had to pay a refiner to take the contract so the oil had a place to go.

Yep most refineries are at idle right now. Or have shut parts or all of the refinery down. Due to a lack of storage/demand. The only thing keeping refineries afloat right now are products like benzene or home heating oil. The actual cost of gasoline from one state to the next has more to do with how much your state taxes gas than anything else. I live in Jersey which is one of the hardest hit by the virus. But the governor could open the southern half of the state today without much worries. If things don't open soon we're going to have a giant mess on our hands. I don't believe the government can keep printing monopoly money to cover everything.

Doesn't it take about 2-4 weeks for crude prices to reflect at the pump? Right now on the NW side of Atlanta 93 is about $2.30 a gallon. I'm thinking it could break the $2 barrier at the rate things are going.

But when price of a barrel goes up they're sure quick to raise the prices 3 mins later.
