Hi guys,

Dumb question, but how do you know the Oil Cooler has gone e.g noise, dash oil pressure light, loss of power? I presume you need to come to a stop instantly.

I'm booked in to get it replaced as a precaution but you never know...

Cheers
David
Depending on how much it fails there are 3 ways.

1. (most common) froth/scum on top of the water in the coolant expansion tank.
2. Oil under the car on your drive
3. (Least common) burning oil smell followed by fire

I had smoke pouring out the back as I was driving along (oil was hitting the exhaust), when I pulled over it dumped a large pool of oil onto the road.

Your coolant can also turn to a coffee colour if the oil and coolant mix, you will then need to have both your oil and coolant flushed. Good luck getting that done properly at Ford, I had to argue it was a fire risk to get them to clean the oil off the underside of my car.

Thanks. I imagine at some point you'd also get an Oil Pressure warning.

Cheers

You would but usually by the time that light has activated and somebody has seen it and reacted you may have killed your engine…

If you wait for an oil pressure warning light it’s probably too late to save the engine. In the typical failure scenario, it doesn’t leak oil to the atmosphere, but instead allows a small amount of oil to make it into the water cooling system which is also under (lower) pressure. The flow of oil into water is fairly low rate in this case and higher oil pressure should prevent water entering the oil system in theory.
