Hi all, new here and hoping for a bit of help. I just picked up a 2017 base GT and want to look into some light mods over the next few months. I'll need to get used to the RWD before anything, as the last "fast" car I owned was a STI. Love the power of the Mustang, but I am taking it very easy while I learn how she grips.

I've been browsing here for a few months while waiting for Ford to bend over with the 18's coming out, and I've realized that I know nothing about modifying a N/A V8.

In my STI, first mods were intake, turboback exhaust and a tune. It appears that with the Mustang, the exhaust won't add any power, just decibels. Is that correct?

Is it pretty safe to assume that an intake and tune are a good place to start for bang for your buck? If I ended up going with a exhaust later on, would there be any need/advantage to tuning for it?

Lastly, I assume a tune that is specific to my vehicle would be loads better than an off the shelf one. Anyone ever use any tuners in WI? I'll check out the regional section, looks pretty dead over there though.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/info.

Catback exhaust has shown to add a few WHP. Headers will def give you more WHP in the 10-15 range. Intake and tune will be the most bang for the buck. With a flex fuel tune and using E85 could be good for an extra 10-15 WHP depending on your mods. The tune is the biggest and cheapest improvement. After that GT350 or Cobra Jet manifold if you need to go further and cams if you want max effort NA power.

Some good tuners: Lund VMP Livernois Palm Beach Dyno AED or Ford Power Packs.

I'd start with a tune and an intake, either PMAS JLT or Steeda.

Welcome to the world of domestics...came from subies myself :headbang:

Your right about the exhaust. Really no power gain(from my understanding) but the sound is glorious and if you go catback you do get rid of the mini fridge resonator under the trans tunnel. Cuts out some weight and helps with heat...thing is a big heat sink under your butt.

Tunes really wake these cars up from what I have read. Lund seems to be really popular around these parts along with the NGuage device but there are a lot of quality tuners around...now idea about specifics to WI.

A CAI will give you a few ponies but nothing dramatic(I noticed some extra vroom with my Steeda at the higher end) but a tune with CAI will add for sure.

Happy Modding

Headers are an exhaust mod and headers have more of an impact than an intake. I think the best way to go would be CAI tube, throttle body, intake (Boss or 350), headers, catback, tune. This is almost full bolt on without FI. I think it should net you some good power. This is the route I'm taking.

Thanks for all the great info! I was fully expecting a “search noob”. Seems like a nice group here already.

I picked up a manual.

I had ~1500 miles when I added the Ford Performance Power Pack 2. It has the GT350 CAI, Throttle Body and a tune. Ordered from a vendor here that gives a pretty big discount + $220 for install at a local shop (with ASE certified techs) that allows me to keep my engine warranty. Total price in for purchase and install was ~$850. Definitely a worth while upgrade if that's the route you're going to take.

For performance mods, my next two will be:

1. Exhaust (probably AWE Touring)
2. Suspension (probably Ford Performance Street Pack)

Get the BMR cradle lock out kit, Barton or MGW shifter. These will really enhance the driving experience. Start with a resonator delete and go from there.

Welcome. Find a tuner you like, and trust. Start with two numbers. E/T AND MPH, follow instructions and that tuner will get you there.

Personally, I don't think the engine is the weak spot here, especially coming from an STI. There is plenty of power already. If you NEED to start somewhere, start with suspension. Some progressive springs and heftier sways. It will allow you to get comfortable with RWD a lot quicker. Once your comfy (and bored of) the 400+ HP, then get a tune and intake.
