You've lived there before?
yup, northern Chicago/Evanston, Wheaton and Kenosha (WI). I agree with NovaGT on general principle.
True, out west on the border with Iowa is actually nice country - a whole lotta nuthin'. Do your best to live on the west side of the river and cross into Mordor only if absolutely necessary.

If it doesn't strictly require face-to-face day in and day out you could try to make the case for 2 weeks on, 3 or 4 off. Have the company rent an 'Extended Stay' or ask around for a room to rent with a family (local church bulletin board etc)

A friend of mine who moved from here to CA long ago posted a picture on Facebook this week of a sand snow man on the beach. I suggested that if the US ever got around to annexing Canada that I would show up in San Diego about a week later, with all my worldly goods following in a big truck. I am often amazed at the people who choose to live in the northern states, never mind moving to them from warm environs, however, if you are planning to drive the car there, I would start with the coolant check and maybe load test the battery to determine its current state. Then there is the must have winter rubber.

Besides salt & taxes, Illinois is fine. I keep my Mustang in the garage all winter. I had my first Mini rust bubble on my F150 after 6 winters. If you don't find a beater for winter, 2 winters won't kill the car.

It's not Chicago area, its the other side of the state. Thomson Area.
OK this is nuts. Many, many years ago I drove from Chicago to Davenport, Iowa. I remember my sales rep telling me about the pen in Thompson. Is that where your going to work? Oh and by the way, your car will be just fine. As already noted, check the anti freeze and get a new battery.

Yes.

Don't.

I don't care how far into this move you are, turn the whole shebangabang around 180 degrees and stay put. There is no woman, job, family or friends worth living there for.

Illinois is a complete and utter shithole. A socialist, retarded place. It's The Suck.

DO NOT MOVE THERE!!!!!

I'm with you, there's no amount of money a job could pay me that make me move there. I'd stay right where I was in Arkansas.

Ahhh, right next to Iowa. You should be good there. It's pretty rural and peaceful. Cost of living is quite low. Eastern Iowa is a great place to find old cars, if you are into that.

I grew up in that part of Illinois. Family is still there. Climate/geography are poor unless you are a farmer. The state is corrupt and broken because of Chicago. I would never go back for any pay increase. What others said, check coolant... need at least -25F protection or more if sitting outside in the wind, and try to find a beater. If not a SUV definitely something FWD. The salt is tough to stay in front of and the sand will pepper your front fascia.

Illinois.....just flat out sucks. Be prepared to be taxed on anything and everything you can and can't possibly think of!!!

And prepare yourself for the tire & suspension damage, stone rock damage and windshield replacement. Our roads are coming apart in chunks!

I've lived in the Chicago area for 40 years straight. Never had a single car stolen. (Knock on wood) These guys think in rural Illinois, near Iowa is all GTA. LOL. Pure comedy.
