It can still happen. (just fixed a car about 3 weeks ago for that, was on E85)
This one recently was on pump 91 though.
But basically when the trans shifts and the cams move.
There is a moment where very rapidly it can swing to some different timing tables. If there is to much spark in those tables, it knocks, then jumps back to the OP tables

I never heard back from you, wondering if you have any way of helping me. My tuner has been trying to send me tunes with the timing reduced, but from what he is describing my car isn't accepting the changes. In case you don't recall, I'm the guy in Nevada with 91 octane, you couldn't get the PC tune to work with my car so you sent me to a local tuner who turned my knock sensors off, so I ended up finding another tuner via email and still can't get the knock sensors to quiet down.
