My winter wheels and tires should be arriving in a couple days. I noticed the owners manual says wheel not torque should be 150 ft-lbs, which seems quite high. This torque should not change with different wheels right? My torque wrench maxes out at 150 ft-lbs, will that be an issue?

That does seem high. Wife's edge is 100. My 135i was about 85.

So about 3 weeks ago I put my summer wheels on. I have separate lugs for these wheels. I removed the stock lugs and 18's and put on my summer 19's with aftermarket lugs (spline drive lug nuts from LMR). I did not realize that the manual says to torque them to 150ft-lb...as others have said that seems excessive! I insteaded torqued them all to 90ft-lb which is what I've done with every vehicle I've ever owned and never had an issue...

Well today on my way home from work I noticed a slight clunking sound from my front passenger wheel area. When I got home...I was missing two of my lug nuts...!

So first thing I did was check the other 18 still on the car...they were all snug and still torqued to 90ft-lb. So...weird.

I'll be calling LMR restoration tomorrow to see about getting some extra lug nuts...hopefully they'll work with me even if I have to buy just two of them to replace.

But yeah...150ft-lb still seems damn high, but I guess there is a reason. Unless I just had two defective lugs and/or studs?

the difference in torque required when going from 1/2 to M14 studs is the answer. the manual isn't wrong ;)

Wow, this is insane. Listen to the manual. 150ft/lbs really isnt that much. The H1 only calls for 100 and I've had others that call for 150.

Besides, its better to tear out a stud from "overtorquing" than to lose a wheel from undertorquing.

I hadn't seen this (resurrected) thread but there have been 2 others. Follow the manual.

My '04 F150 had the same lug stud size as the new Mustang, was 150 foot pounds as well.

Manual says 150, so be it.

Just switched over to my summers today. Put them to 150. Maxed out my torque wrench, but no problems.
