The paint in my 2017 Base R in the trunk area is pretty much similar to your car with most of the Ruby Red seeming to be much of an overspray paint job.

HR019 was assembled on the second day of production in early June 2016 so who knows what was going on back then.

I have a good friend who owns HR001 and it is also a Base R model and will take pictures of his trunk area in due course as his car was produced in February 2016 and was supposedly went through the VIP process at FR so will see what his trunk area looks like and will post pictures accordingly.

Chris, your trunk area looks to be the best of any Base R model that I have seen!

Just a for what it's worth, back in the day of the 69'70'which Im familiar with as restoring a 70' B2 to assembly line standards the under coating of paint was known as slop gray which comprised of the left over paint from previous days run. It was used on the underside of the car & on some of the components in the engine bay. This underlayment of paint on this trunk area reminds me of the days restoring.

Chris, where'd you get the inflation kit? I'd like to get one for my car...makes sense. I also need to find replacement fluid for the kit in one of my RS's as I used it (successfully) but I've only ever found the whole kits for sale.
Kit came with my R (non-base). No idea where to get it besides Ford? But, it's nice to know it works!

Is there any difference between base R and R with electronics package? I didn't know base R doesn't come with carpeting. Pretty cool! ;)

If they painted it fully it would have added weight!

That overspray has to add at least 0.5 lbs!! :D

Interesting thread. I have thought about stripping my trunk out when I put my cage in, but in the interest of keeping it as original as I can (with a giant roll cage in it), I'm going to keep it in.

No detectable overspray in mine...must mean that AG really is just primer ;-)
(The darker paint around the landing pads for the rollbar was added by my cage builder)

Looking to see the differences in paint application on base R trunks. It seems that there are variances, maybe based on color or otherwise, with some showing more or less primer and overspray.

If you have a base R and don't mind sharing pics, please post shots of the trunk, including the spare tire well and both sides.

Here are mine.....

Just to give you an idea of how much the paint application process has progressed in the trunk area for these base models over the last 25 months I will attempt to provide some pictures of a 2017 VIP base R model (HR001) that was actually assembled in February 2016.

Based on Muligan's recent pictures of his 2018 base R model the paint process has either changed dramatically or we have some other factors in play here?

Very interesting to note that the original/first base R model came with a tire inflator kit and very little overspray.

One thing that I have learned after ~50 years of being in our hobby is to "never say never" and this is just another example of how thinking can change prior to a full production car being assembled.

The pictures are not the best but it is what I have right now.

;)

I dont suppose any Base model peeps want to trade the trunk bumpers for a regular trunk trim piece?

Re-resurrecting a really old thread on this so that anyone else looking for those pedestal-style bump stops that are unique to the base-R has the latest info.

Per White Bear Lake parts, as of 2/21/22, the left side is showing 2 in stock nationwide, but marked as "obsolete," so they can't even try ordering them. There are 4 showing in stock for the right side.

And as is typical of the bespoke parts for the base-R cars, a single right side version will set you back over 180 bucks!
