Maybe I missed it, but has anyone tried simply unplugging the sensor or leaving it out of the hole to sense ambient conditions (assuming it's a temp probe that screws in and can be removed and plugged) so it won't shut the car down? Anyone? Bueller?[/QUOT
You know.. That would probably work..but at the risk of damaging the tranny..I have read till I'm cross eyed on this..many seem to think the catalitic converters are not helping the situation either.
Probably so on the cats but my guess is that if any mustang had the nanny set at the same trans temp as the GT350 does, they too would shut down after 10 min of being pushed. I use a GT500 trans and it can take 340 degrees all day long :D Just a little perspective fwiw. I do change the fluid at least every 4 hours with Mobil 1 ATF. Even with the heat shields, the exhaust on the thing is hot enough to cook the soles off your shoes without a false floor and reflective under the pedals. So, while the car NEEDS a cooler to keep within the conservative factory limits, it might work just fine without one.

So my concern is...can the Gt350 handle 90+ degree temps at 85 MPH for extended travel (tank of gas)? I'm from Texas and that's a typical road trip.

2016 GT350 Magnetic w/Black Stripes / Black Roof /Tech Package Build January, ETA March (US Port), Germany Apr, under MSRP
No!!I've had mine shut down twise on me running down the highway at 80mph in 5th ..first was on the way to the lmr cruise in..at that time I didn't know of the issue..no prompt..just the car boggingdown which then I pulled over to check the car over..then drove the car the rest of the way there and back in 6th..second was on the back roads from granbury to springtown..about a 50 min drive..went limp again! And threw codes this time

340 Degrees is well above the effective flashpoint for Fords Mercon, and Mercon V fluid. Maybe Mobil 1 is higher. In either case I am concerned with the long term effects for those of us who were looking at keeping the car for a while and what happens to the transmission long term after warranty if someone stuck to the standard ford maintenance interval when the transmission regularly might see 240-260 degree temps in the summer. I for one have never had a vehicle that on the road at any speed ran this warm.

The viscosity drops very rapidly at these temperatures and I would be afraid that the fluid is losing too much of its effective lubrication properties.

I've bought 4brand new cars is 7months from the dealership that my 350 is at right now..after they told me it was the tranny cooling issue I told them thats not acceptable for me . i declined to pick up my car..they put me in a rental and were in the process of working a deal to get this rectified.. I'll update

Be careful, some folks think running in 5th on the highway constitutes severe use :)

My car is actually pretty good in the low 80s, and 6th vs 5th showed little difference. Its always been the ambient temps, 90 plus and i am over 240 getting groceries. I'm in the country and drive 20 plus miles regularly to get anywhere good. If the mercury is getting over 90 I would be careful on a longer trip. I have no humidity data, I dont know if drier areas are better.

I dont think one must hit limp mode for it to be a realistic concern for owners.

Thank you for the info. I hope something is done to keep these cars workable in the more severe summer locations.

Maybe I missed it....what are the trans temps and rear diff temps when they go into limp mode? Or do the tech cars not have the temp indicators like the track package?

Edit: Looks like 280* for the trans for when it triggers the reduced RPM's. I guess I didn't realize the tech cars have no temp sensors for the diff and trans.

if I can offer one advice, as soon as you hit limp the next step is upshift quickly to gain speed.

cause the car behind is not expecting you to hit limp

Superman, I would definitely agree with you. I am definitely concerned about this issue for a variety of reasons, even though I have not yet experienced limp mode in my tech. There are just too many tech owners that have had the same problem. I hit 90 - 95 mph on a regular basis on the PGB Tollway here in Dallas, and I don't have to tell you how hot it is here right now. But now I think I'll go a little easier on it until I'm sure that I'm not doing damage to the car unknowingly.

Shutting down on the highway @ 80 MPH seems like a true defect rather than an "application issue" (like running the car on a track without the coolers).

I would definitely be annoyed if the car couldn't handle a highway excursion.

I agree. There should be absolutely no reason the car should go into limp mode on the streets(unless youre doing some serious spirited driving).

This is akin to your car overheating during normal use in the hot summer, anyone would deem that unacceptable by any standards. Instead of the engine, its the tranny. I wouldnt be surprised if a class action lawsuit resulted from this.

That is probably true on the racetrack, but not on the street.

Excellent point on the car behind- don't know if upshifting's gonna do too much if the engine is limited though..

Anyone know if the hazards come on automatically when one hits limp mode? :headbonk:
Hey Ford, another liability identified aroung limp mode....
