After a weekend at VIR, which for those who have never been to Heaven.. takes a lot out of the front left tire.
Making a full tire front, to rear swap this morning, I see that the inner of the right front has been rubbing the coilover spring. Creating a deep grove in my Pirelli Trofeo R Comps.

The tire is now toast and I was lucky to catch it - currently running SVE R350 19x10 with 285 tires.

The long and short of the story.. I am going to go 18’s, for more clearance to the fender and a better choice of slick track only tire.

Simple question to all..? best 18” track wheel, which clears the Brembos, has enough offset to put a min 285 away from the coilover.

Apex EC7.? Others..?

Hey Dave,
I’ve been very happy with the EC-7s. You can swing by and check them out if you want.

Hmm. I'm running 19x11 with 305-30/19 with regular springs but with 25mm spacers and no rub

Spacers on the front! Sorry to hear about your tire. But it just seems the offset is a little high if you are rubbing the inner side of the tire on the coilover. 19x11 here and no inner rub on my coilovers (effective offset is ~ ET22).

What is your PSI and offset? 40? How much room between tire and spring at rest? Do Trofeo's bulge significantly when under braking/cornering forces? Looks like you need at least 5mm spacer.

Yes just throw on a 5mm front spacer.

IIRC the Apex 18x10's are +42, so they will need a spacer too with 285's. And all the typical 11" square setups require a spacer.

Wheel selection is pretty skimpy in 18" that will clear the Brembo's. Especially at value prices. So it is not a change to be taken lightly.

So now I have a dilemma...

1. Do I stay with my current wheels 19x10’s and run 295’s toyo RR’s. Max tire for wheel width.. anything to be concerned about..?
2. Fit ARP extended studs, so I can use spacers up to 20mm, clearing the inner suspension.
3. Lift the ride height an inch on the coilovers to ensure the wider tires clear the wheel arch.

OR

Buy another full set of squared wheel and Tire combo with 18’s and correct offset to negate the need for spacers...
Nothing showing up in the classifieds for Apex wheels ☹

Any advice or direction would be appreciated..

I’d just throw a 5mm spacer on there and continue to run 285 tires. Its by far the cheapest option. If you still want 11” wide wheels later you’re barely out pocket change for the 5mm spacers.

That said, I’m enjoying the 11” wheels, 25mm spacers on ARP studs with camber plates for track/autox, but just switched to OPMustang’s longer studs so I can go with even wider spacers and clear tires a bit wider than the usual 305. Consider those instead of the ARP studs for more flexibility in the future.

I’d do 18x11s for a 3rd set to have even more options (someday), but 19” tire selection is pretty good.

I have to buy new rubber anyway, after the RF damage at VIR. I want full slicks or close to.. limited options for 19’s. Most are 295 wides, which are a stretch on the 10’s.

$1000+ on new tires (19 or 18’s)
$2000- on new wheels (18’s)
$500 for Studs, spacers etc...

I already have the 5mm spacers 😝
As the car is lowered, tire clearance to fender can be an issue in deep compression.

GY supercar 3R then 285/35/19. Buy thru USAA for 25-30% off.

If you're a track guy then you're going to have to buy 18" wheels or go 19x11" sooner or later I suspect. Not to say you can't fully enjoy the car on 19x10's... I mean, if an instructor can lap 2-3 seconds faster than you on aged out 285's, it's clearly a skills problem, not an equipment one.

What coil-overs are you using?
I have some modestly used 295 Michelin supersports I'd like to get rid of. And a set of NIB 20x11et50 you can use extended studs and spacers on. GoodYear has very good coverage in the 20" size.

I have Ridetech HQ Level 2 coilovers. 400/600lb springs F/R.
Car has been fuly weighted and corner balanced.

My 285 Pirelli trofeo R comps had a wideish sidewall, which on the unloaded tire on a clockwise track deflected or distorted, rubbing on the coilover spring.

Honestly, I’m being cheap.. plenty of other stuff on the shopping list.
The car was a daily driver, it’s now progressing to a dedicated track car.

4 point cage, race seats, 6 point harness, rear seat delete... the list goes on.
A new set of rims and tires wasn’t planned in the budget.

A stop gap solution on current 19’s before going down to 18’s would be my ideal scenario.

shouldn't tires (or wheels+tires) be the first thing on this list? and maybe a 4-point harness with stock seats?

I'm guessing that 10" wide wheels was one of the first things . . .

I have the Schroth quick fit Pro 4 point and stock seats :)
I also have track dedicated wheels and tires (19x 10's) and 285 squared R comp tires - This was first priority.

Then multiple Suspension mods - full bracing and stiffening with adjustability, brake cooling, race pads, Aero front & rear, quick thro shifter, GT350 mani & intake and HP Tuners RR tune..

I know I'm not talking Wheels anymore :)
