Hello All,
Lost my key fob over the weekend and had to have my wife bring me the second set. Do I have to purchase a new key from the dealer? I know I prolly have to get the programming done at the dealer right? If anyone knows where I can purchase a new fob outside the dealer would be greatly appreciated. Ford quoted me 269.00 for the fob only and the parts dept did not know how much to reprogram a new key. Thank you in advance.

look for a good locksmith and ask what they can do. There is one near me that has fobs (don't know the source) and program for considerably less than Ford.

Cal a lock smith, my sales guy said he had a guy who does there's and I could pay him directly. Can't remember but seems like it was $250 for fob and programming vs Ford's $550. Only difference is the new Fob has a Ford logo instead of a Mustang.
If you have 2 Fobs you can program a third from what I read.

I just read the fine print on the website link I posted. The "OEM" fobs are used and reconditioned.

As everyone has said, call a local locksmith. The dealer where I bought my car doesn't even program their own, they bring in a local locksmith.

Fobs can be bought from a dealer, Amazon, Ebay or the locksmith. The dealer provided locksmith who did mine had Mustang fobs so ask, don't just accept the generic Ford fob unless you don't care.

Whoever you have do the programming be sure they clear all fobs and start fresh. Two reasons. One it's safer incase the missing fob was stolen, not just lost. And two, the computer will only accept a finite number of fobs - 5 (I think) total.

And, yes, you can program a third fob if you have two working ones. Instructions may be in the owners manual but on YouTube for sure.

And….

the actual steel key in the fob would need to be cut to match the car too so it works in the door and other keyholes if ever needed…

This is true. The locksmith who did mine had the machine in his van. He entered my VIN and the machine cut the physical key.

Agreed, but unless technology has changed over the years, in my experience they needed BOTH factory fobs to issue a third one.

Nope, locksmiths use a kind of scan tool. When mine was done he completely cleared all the existing fobs from the car and re-registered my existing fob and registered the new one. It took about 30 minutes including cutting the physical key plus a spare physical key for me.

You only need two keys if you want to add a third using the car, not a scan type tool

Thanks for the technology update, that is interesting…if I follow correctly, sounds like a new code is assigned to the vehicle and fobs…IF that is the case then I would assume that any exterior keypad needs to be recoded to match?

For the fob think of it like adding a garage door remote but more sophisticated. The car, like your garage door opener, has to learn that a fob is ok to work with. The learning process is just somewhat more secure.

As for the exterior keypad, I'm assuming you mean like what most modern Fords have? That is not always the case. I had to replace the exterior keypad on my wife's Fusion and it did not need any programming. I assume because they are hardwired
I bought a used one for her car from Ebay and it was plug-n-play.

i added an A-pillar keypad to my truck, I had to either look for the label with the code number or use both keys cycling the ignition for it to appear, that was my keypad code, I assumed that was the fob code as well but realize now that the fob code may be more sophisticated. Thanks again.

Guess no one looks to eba anymore. But I bought two from different dealers there about $50 each seller, SFfobsinc., was the last, got a mustang key fob and two extra uncut keys and all three cut by him before shippment. Took about 4 days to get them, your millage may very and all he neede to cut the keys was a quiality photo from a exsiting key $20 each to cut the keys and programed them myself but you nee both admin keys to do that which you don't have so dealer or locksimith with correct scan tools. NOTE: NOT AFFILATED WITH THIS SELLER, but was happy with his service and speed of shipping I now have 4,which is the max for fobs doing a my key to keep inside a EMP bag hidden inside the vehicle just in case but you will need a mechancle key to unlock the door, hence one extra key flat to keep in wallet just in case., have one emergency fob in both mustang and explorer with speed set to 60 max just to get home and incase someone finds and steals vehicles not high speed chase by LEO. Just my .02

I can't vouch for these guys, I've never purchased anything from them. But might be worth taking a look at.

I can vouche for them. Have a bought several keys and all arrived like-new and no issues.

You can use Forscan to program them if you have 2 keys, and access to the internet from the car.

You will need a locksmith to cut the key, so factor that into your decision.
