Worth it? Will it actually help performance? I've always seen conflicting comments on this mod.

Thanks.

Just a filter swap or one of their CAIs?
I don't think the filter will do much. Also, on some cars the oil screws up the O2 sensor.

From my experience on my 94 Mustang, 06 Corvette, a couple of other vehicles that I own that are dedicated track vehicles and an old 89 LX 5.0 that I used to own you won't be able to see or notice any difference with just a K&N filter unless your current filter is damaged or extremely dirty. I don't own or have modified and raced a 15 Mustang yet so I could be wrong though.

The best way that I've seen on the vehicles that I race to make power from the air filter system is to modify the air intake velocity by changing the air inlet tube from the air filter to the throttle body with one that matches the flow requirements of your current combination. A free flowing air filter also helps as well as an Outerwear to keep bugs, water and dirt out of your filter but I've never seen major power gains with just a replacement filter on a near stock vehicle because the air filter usually isn't the biggest restricition in the system.

As far as a K&N messing up sensors the only thing that I've ever seen is when someone has really over oiled one and the oil has gotten onto the mass air flow sensors heated wire and caused a problem. For that to happen you pretty much have to soak the filter in the K&N oil after you clean it. If you follow their directions and use a moderate amount of oil after cleaning the filter you won't have any problems.

Attached is a picture of my 94 with an Outerwear and a link to a video of me soaking an Outerwear in water that I've been using for the last 9 years. In the video you can see that they repel water fairly well and also protect the filter from bugs and dirt without restricting airflow.

Nice 94! I had one too. Is that an Anderson Powerpipe?

I also have used K&N filters on my 94 and my 05 GT. I never had a problem with them. And it wasnt the O2 sensors supposedly being damaged it was the MAF sensor. As stated do not over oil them. A nice even coat to get it to change color is all that is needed.
K&N has some videos where they defend their product... [ame]

I did have a MAF sensor fail on my 05 but I cannot say the K&N did it. I did clean it with CRC Maf cleaner too.

That's a C&L air intake tube with a C&L mass air meter housing. I've owned my 94 for close to 20 years now and have tried the K&N FIPK, BBK cold air kit, stock setup with a K&N and a Pro-M setup and found the C&L stuff to work best with my combination. I've also experimented with different types of airbox/shields and found the conical K&N filter with an Outerwear works best for me.

To be honest I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone does with the 2015 GT. From what I've seen I think that there is some room for improvement on the air induction side of things.

Checking back in for feedback on K&N filters, to see if anyone's gotten one and thinks it was worth it?

I got the aFe Pro Dry S instead of the K&N. No oiling, easy cleaning. Adds a nice little growl in the mid range and an improvement in throttle response. Probably only a little power. For $65 I am happy.

I also ordered an Afe pro dry. Should be here Thursday. I'll let you know my thoughts when I get some time with it.

Most newer vehicles, the filter alone won't make much difference. The biggest advantage is that you never have to change it, just clean and re-use. Unless you're going CAI, I wouldn't bother with just the filter on a new car. At least wait until the paper filter needs changing, then switch to the K&N if you want.

I've run them on 4 vehicles and the only ones that seemed maybe a little stronger afterward were a motorcycle and a 20 yr old Bronco that probably needed a new filter anyway.

I'd agree there is a possibility of this oil on the sensor problem if it was over oiled by the user... K&N went through an extensive court battle on this subject and proved that their factory oiled units do not cause an issues with the O2 sensors or MAF sensor.

Installed the AFE Pro Dry S today. Limited drive with it (to and from work). Definite sound of the car sucking in more air when punching the gas. Seems to help with throttle response and maybe a little more mid-range rpm power but may be placebo. the car did seem to idle cruise a little faster out of my driveway though (automatic tranny).

Really just bought it because I wanted a reuseable filter without the need for oiling like my old K&N filters. Fit and finish is definitely top notch.

We'll see if I notice any mpg improvements over time but I'm happy with the purchase.

So to clean the AFE Pro Dry S do you just hose it out, let it dry, and put it back in?

It actually has a graph with different ways to clean it and how effective they are. Knocking the dust off by tapping it on something restores it to something like 83% flow. Vacuuming I with a shop vac restores it to 96%. Finally, washing it with water and a mild detergent restores it to 100%.
