I’d get this oil analyzed by black stone labs or similar and see if there’s anything weird in it. It’ll help you understand if there was junk in there.
this is definitely a situation where I would do this. send the nerds some of the black stuff and see whats what.

also drain it into a clean pan so you can check for sparklies.

This is crude (no pun intended) but if you were to drag a strong magnet through the oil drain pan, would it capture any ferrous particles in the waste oil? Obviously this shouldn’t be considered a substitute for lab testing, but could you learn anything worthwhile this way?

Yes. That's how @honeybadger discovered that he had a problem with his factory engine a few years back. When the drain plug is out, it's easy to probe around in there with a magnet-on-a-stick tool.
