Is the S550 a disappointment?

The fit & finish on my '15 S550 is excellent...but I hand picked my S550 from a inventory of a more than 125 in-stock Mustang's at AutoNation Katy Ford...

A good dealership would repair any apparent quality problems found during the PDI process before offering the vehicle to the consumer...

This is what i try to tell people about brand loyalty. For EVERYTHING.... I don't understand why folks don't realize that if A comes out with something B will come out with Something +1. If you always buy A then you will be stuck waiting for your +1 upgrade for sometime. Buy what you like and think is best at the time you want/need have the money for it. There will ALWAYS be something better.

Don't be a brandwhore... buy what you think is best and you will do fine.

And that's how 95% of the time, you'll generally overall be happy with your purchase and what you drive/own. The other 5% is for the people who buy what they wanted but it didn't work out for them for whatever reason.

I don't see how it would be labeled a disappointment. I think this is the best starting platform a mustang has had. I came from a BRZ that spent a very large amount of it's time at autocross and a few trackdays. This car handles incredibly well for it's weight. It is also extremely easy to drop over 100lb in almost ALL rotating mass off this car. Not to mention a catback takes off another 10-20lb. Then you will be at the camaro's ballpark weight. I think with some suspension parts and those lightweight parts included and a few boltons these cars will be track monsters. There's always someone faster, but I don't see how you could be disappointed with nearly 490hp with very basic boltons and a tune.

On top of all the performance aspects, I find my car to be very well built so far. I am nervous of issues popping up down the road, but it's very well put together. I don't have any noticeable panel gap differences or anything like that, and it feels much more solid than my Subaru ever did. I think the mustang is the best overall DD performance car out there right now. I don't care that a camaro is a little faster. It's fugly and it's like riding in a tank.

I can certainly understand why the S550 era can come off as disappointing to some die hard Mustang fans. I know I've been pretty disappointed with Ford's communication around performance of the car. The Mustang has historically been a straight line car for the most part. We've seen years of continue straight line performance improvement. With the S550 straight line performance improvement comes secondary to handling. That's a big change in direction and a shock since for years we've been programmed that 0-60, 1/4 mile and top speed matter.

It will be interesting to see how Ford responds to the new Camaro and overall sales now that both cars are a new model.

Not entirely! Better car compared to the old gen, faster on a road coarse, better interior and list goes on.

But what do you call it if its heavier and slower in the straight line than an old gen? On top if it, no improvement on gas milage! As an engineering and design stand point, i would still call it a fail! Doesn't matter if its good at one thing but not at the other.

Its not like Ford reinvented the wheel twice, IRS has been around for a very long time, they even used it before. I am afraid the one thing that every mustang fan hates, the direct injection might save the day for the future. Now you can deny it all you want but when Ford comes up with it in the future and shows the results, every body is gonna love it.

Anyways, Ford should have been damn sure the car exceeded the previous gen in every way period. Not? Go back to the drawing board!

Please educate yourself. The '15/16's are as fast in a straight line, stock for stock as the 5G Mustang. Look around at the drag strip times that have been posted here by folks that know how to drive.

Mod for mod, the S550 is going to run faster vs. 5G, that is a fact that has been proven too.

Average stock vs stock they are not! Roll or from a dig they are not! I don't know where are you getting this! Most people buy the premium trim mustangs and with the added weight they fall behind in a straight line. Its not magic just simple physics.

You can see couple of guys putting down great numbers here on this thread but that doesn't mean as average the new car is faster in a straight line. We should learn to admit the facts otherwise Ford will be spinning their wheels for a very long time.

40 lbs? Are you serious Todd? 3650 lbs premium trim vs 3820 premium lbs! Thats more than 40lbs my friend! In what universe thats 40?

Do you race it for money or something? Because other than the straight line performance the S550 is a better car in every way over the S197.

You should just trade that POS S550 in for a used S197.

S550 isn't faster than an S197 at a strip, stock for stock. S197 can get down to 12.2-12.4s with a good driver. S550 gets to mid 12s.

Once modding comes into play, the S550 should be faster. It has the Boss and CJ cams, so bolt on to bolt on, the S550 will have better results.
