HPDE oil weight

This is with ~200 miles of track time at Circuit of the Americas being the first mileage on the sample, and the rest is daily driving here in Texas. I know some folks have been waiting for a sample of the new 0W40 SS. I ran this car pretty hard at COTA, probably about as hard as you can run this car considering how fast and hard that track is on cars. I think 0w40 was perfectly up to the task according to the results.

Thanks for sharing, I agree with you that COTA is probably one of the toughest tracks I have run on, my oil temp is just off the yellow most of the time at this track.

Good to know the oil is good, what oil was it? I'm using Quaker State 5w-30 for track days

I'd love to see Fords engineers opinion. seems to me the engine is designed for a specific viscosity, due to heat and clearances. I have stayed with Amzoil 5-20 and don't see any reason to change until a Ford engineer says different.
Anybody pay attention to the actual oil pressure with a heavier viscosity?

Youd be incorrect. You must have forgotten the road runner used 5w50. You have the same rods and bearings and clearances they do. After all, you have a revised and improved roadrunner. Your only differences is different timing chains, harmonic balancer, piston and intake manifold. You have better heads than the boss. There have been hundreds of 302 bosses that stopped using 5w50 because of it being an oil that has elevated oil pressure on the street over a 5w30 or 5w40. The smart owners that didnt road course their car to death or at all switched to that and are running perfectly

Thats fine. Dont trust a ford fanatic. Dont trust an ex ford master tech (of ten years) that moved onto bigger and better places. Dont trust a master tech of over 3 decades of experience. What do i know....

I alwaysran 5W-20 either Motorcraft or Mobil 1. I just switched to BG 5W-30 and will test it at Daytona for 3 days. I will pay attention to Hot oil pressures [MENTION=23031]mnmike59[/MENTION]. I will sample and report back.

The oil temperature gauge is useless, so everyone needs to know that unless you install an actuall oil temperature gauge and have changed viscosity don't panic if the oil temp shows hot. I put ambient oil in my engine and my oil temp was in the middle LOL.

Why not keep this going? I've run Amsoil 5w30 SS all for the past year, 16 or 17 track days and temps have always been in the green.

That said, I'm installing the GT350 manifold so rpms will be going up. Would it be wise to go to the 0w40 SS or just stick with the 5w30?

How aggressive are you at the track? 0W40 is a great idea if you see below cold temperatures during the winter months. It would be fine as a year round weight too. I'll also be great if you can push it hard.

At my 'home' track I'd say I push it about as hard as the tires permit.

I'm in Florida, so cold is relative. There are sure to be a few days in the 30's and 40's, but not many. If history repeats, there may be one track day when it's snowing to start and 60's by mid afternoon.

I guess i should have looked at your location. You could run 0w40 year round if you preffered. What filter are you running?
