hey y’all so i decided to try and install the bmr cb005 on my car the other day, and this was actually the second time ive tried - the first time i didn’t have the right tools believe it or not so i got the first front IRS bolt out but had to put it back in - i made sure to be careful and twisted reverse before threading it in to make sure i didn’t cross thread, but this might not have worked because this time when i went in, my trashy harbor freight impact couldn’t knock off the bolt which wasn’t a shock but even my breaker bar was struggling. it was turning the bolt, very slowly and it was very tight, but it just wouldn’t break loose. i’d get it a very minimal amount with a lot of effort bracing myself against the caliper, and repeated this maybe 7 times before i gave up and threw everything back on.

i don’t properly know the symptoms of crossthreading and i definitely didn’t impact that bolt back in the first time so im clueless as to how this could’ve happened - if anyone can confirm, please educate me on
1. what the hell do i do now, and
2. how the hell do i fix it if that’s the case

yes, i suck at turning wrenches. but at least i try!

Probably just jammed into the hole of the interfacing IRS element, like front knuckle to strut bolts .....I would be careful don't want to snap the bolt. Try and wiggle the other part at same time as loosening the bolt. Gently nudge back and forth while wiggling the interference part.

I never use impacts on loosening anything until I've loosened by hand already because can cross thread instantly.

What size tap would be needed ? I might have to add it on my list when I install mine as I read multiple people having issues with these bolts

Hey Bob, things definitely could be binding up. I had a similar issue when doing the Steeda alignment kit on my IRS last year. I had all 3 bolts in, went to do the last one, threaded it in by hand a few turns, then went to town with the impact. It didn’t like that and it started cutting new threads. I said fuck it and went full send, got it to torque to 129 ft. lbs.

When I pulled it all apart this year to put on a bunch of goodies, a bunch of shavings from rethreading that bolt came out. Went back in like butter the second go around, no impacting on any of those bolts.

I see you are in IL, if you aren’t too far I can swing out and help you sometime hear soon. I’m up in Grayslake near the Wisconsin border. Let me know.

As a mechanic friend of mine always says "cross threading is nature's loctite"
thats more true than I want it to be.
