What’s the reasoning behind cinder block construction? And cost difference vs traditional studs?

I was told that the cinders are more resistant to hurricanes and/or high winds. I can see how that can be the case.

I’m not sure about the difference in cost though. Our son lives 2.5 hours north of where we’re building and his is a stick built home with absolutely no cinders.

The other thing I’ve noticed is that the cinders seem to take less time than wood to form the walls.

Thanks! It’s a 300 acre community located within Marion County near SR326 and US301/441.

Floor plan diagram (rough draft). Some changes were made afterward such as deleting the French doors from the lanai to the dining room. Ignore the SF listed on the diagram. Actual SF was listed in one of my earlier posts.

I’d like to point out a very simple, but important detail that was done to make life a little easier for me when it comes to mounting TVs and other items to the walls. I asked the builder to add horizontal bracing in certain areas throughout the house, so that I can easily hit solid mounting points and not have to take the long way around locating studs. I’ve already taken and recorded measurements to help me locate the bracing once the drywall goes up.

In addition, I had a few dedicated circuits added in the shop area for my hand dryer, air compressor, 2 post lift and mini split, as well as an auto transfer switch for a future generator.

Put about half a dozen outlets in the entertainment center. Seems you can never have enough. And don’t forget to pre wire for surround sound speakers.

This^^ is a good idea. I’ve had problems with the drywall anchors loosening up in the past from the repeated removing and replacing of the towels. A solid anchor point for those would certainly prevent that

There’s 4 in there now, but I can always add a power-strip if needed.

I get where you’re going with all of that but I’m a different kind of guy I guess. I think hanging TVs are the worst eye sore in a house. Can’t stand them and will never hang my TVs. Eye level is where they should be. My neighbors are gonna love me once I get it all hooked up.

We currently have our TV sitting at eye level now and it’s not bad. However, with the limited space in these bedrooms nowadays, it makes sense for me to hang ours, as we typically like the TV dead ahead and there’s usually no room for a dresser in front of the bed.

With the bedroom I get that. You are absolutely correct. I was more thinking of the living room. Sometimes the dressers gotta be to the right or the left of the bed so you can’t have the TV on it dead on. Can’t wait to see the final set up.

I completely understand your friend’s point of view and yours too. I’ve never worked on a farm before, but I can only imagine how much work is involved in maintaining one.

That’s some serious work right there. We had way too many trees at the last house. The new property has zero trees on it for now. Two are three will be more than enough for me this time around.

Apologies if you already mentioned it, but both houses we build, we insulated the bedrooms and bathrooms. The goal was to keep sound transfer down.

Granted we have two kids under 5, your use might be different. But it helped a ton with sound.

I can't wait to be at your stage in life. We have a 2700SF house now and I hate maintaining it. We've already decided to go smaller once the kids move out, and keep RV hookups for kids hahaha

Yes, we’re having sound deadening insulation in the walls. RV hookups for the kids is funny. I‘m glad I wasn’t sipping on my coffee when I read that, or I would have sprayed coffee everywhere.

1 lawn tractor and two push mowers cutting and trimming 5 hrs haha. We needed 4 row deep trees for wind break and looks.
