We are now, for the first time, about to get bonnet louvres in the UK with the '18 Mustang.
My question is "When it rains does water drip onto the engine?"

So as far as I can tell, yes, there's an opening so some water will get in, but no, it's not a lot and it's not an issue. For the S550 the left louvre is right over the air intake and it doesn't cause problems.

Also, a little water in the engine bay isn't really an issue.

There are some channels under it will guide the water around but a little water is not a big deal. My Subaru has a massive hood scoop.

Water won't hurt the engine. Look at exotic cars, most of them have extensive vents that pour water onto the engine in the rain or when washing the car. Not a big deal.

I've never given them a full examination but mine appear to be completely blocked off. Plus the heat shield covers them up underneath anyway. The aren't actually venting anything. Disclaimer...I have a 16, which is the only one that has turn signals in it. I've never examined another year.

I play, "let's see how much water I can gather on the hood" game every time it rains.
It's hilarious to see all the water splash back up on the windshield when you brake. Water rushes to the front of the hood, and the wind blasts it back up to the windshield.
2 years in the weather. My wild Mustang is doing just great. No issues.

My 16 has holes in the vents. In fact the Performance Pack 2 air filter is right below the vent, so in theory, the vent can leak into the airbox.

I'm not in a position to go look at it but what about the heat shield under the hood? There's no holes to allow anything to pass out or in the extractors. I've never looked under it to see if the extractors have some kind of channel to push water back toward the windshield or maybe out the sides under hood, but they definitely aren't dripping directly down. Those things can't be extracting any significant amount of heat regardless.

I love watching the puddles drift around after a fresh application of quick detailer. Passengers like to comment on it too.

Ok it was irritating me so I went outside. I do see holes in the heat shield too. I think when I looked before I had forgotten just how far forward they are on the hood so I was looking farther back..lol.

While in motion, no rain will enter those vents. It's like a small version of the back of a pickup truck. (the easiest way to keep your cargo dry in the rain is to just not stop driving)

Even with the Power Pack 2 the vent is offset from the filter. Any water that enters while parked will drip straight to the bottom of the air box and drain. Should any water contact the filter it will simply bead off. The filter is oiled.

I have an Airaid with the sealed box - it has been in the car for two years. A couple months ago, I decided to finally clean the filter - the top of the box had NEVER been off up to this point. One of the bolts/nuts was rusted together from rain water - caused by the vent. I could not remove this bolt, it spun along with the nut. I spun the entire air box cover around...this chewed up the plastic on one side, creating a gap, and , I spun the bolt as fast as I could with a drill...this heated the plastic, and it lifted out of the air box. I drilled the sloppy hole to clean it up, and re-installed everything less one bolt. I am not missing a bolt and have a gap on one side of the box. We had heavy rain one night a couple weeks before Harvey hit...my filter was wet...car was not running right all morning. I pulled my hood insulator down, cut a chunk of it, and stuffed it up inside the vent...now one vent is blocked off, and water hasn't been an issue since. I will probably go back to stock airbox at some point.

I blocked off the vent on my ‘17 after my car actually ingested water into the intake tract and played nasty games as it got drawn thru the MAF sensor. The box was sealed tight, so guessing it picked up water thru the small openings in the grill where it draws in fresh air. It is an issue.

i have the same exact issue with the Airaid box, bolt wont come out and just spins and i had to spin the plastic shield around and it chewed the plastic but didnt create a gap fortunately. pretty crappy design flaw, i hope they address it on future products.

Weird. I have an air raid intake. The cap screws are stainless and the threaded inserts are brass. How the hell are they rusting??? Neither of those metals are ferrous and can't rust.

Stainless stuff can gall or cold weld but you really have to crank down on the bolts for that to happen.

Use a little anti sieze on the cap screws and it'll never happen again.
