I know the original poster doesn't seem to care about track worthiness but I don't know if I would say the Miata is way more fun. In my experience the Mustang is load of fun and some of that is V8 power/sound based as has been mentioned. However, I agree that bang for the buck especially with gas prices I would strongly consider the 86, Miata or others. The Ecoboost is still pretty heavy when comparing power to weight of the 86 and others.

I've actually been thinking about buying an older FRS/BRZ to build a semi-dedicated track car. Besides being better on gas it's better on other consumables as well. Brake pads, rotors, tires...plus these things also cost less they do for the Mustang to start with.
My 79 Fox (2700#) and 93 Miata (2400#) are both caged and stay at the track. They are raced in our monthly vintage wheel to wheel series.

If going 4 cyl Turbo, I would get a 2022 VW Golf R. It will best a HPP Mustang on the track and at the strip. Does not sound as good as the HPP, but that can be fixed. The R also costs more - more on par with the GT. It also has a much better interior and utility. The Mustang does beat it out in sportiness looks wise, but for what it is, the R is a much better "sportscar" than the HPP. I have it on my list of possible next cars....whenever new cars are actually available again (probably next year when the recession sets in).

Anyway as others have said, get what you want and don't worry so much about want others think.
As someone that owned a Golf GTI, they're good cars but seriously lacking in the soul department. Everything feels numb and isolated. Yeah they're quick and comfortable, but it falls far short of a sports car experience IMO. They do make great daily drivers though.

I have a MT, handling packaged HPP ( the only option it didn't come with was the floor mats) which has an upgraded intercooler and exhaust, gets 30+ mpg on the highway and LOVE it. I miss the sound of a 5.0 but not the fuel economy.

I do not believe HPP comes with upgraded IC, so if you have stock intercooler, consider swapping for a mishimoto or cpe or any aftermarket stock location intercooler. its like something like 30-50% extra cooling in same spot. I swapped mine out under belly pan.

the car has a diff torque curve due to slightly larger turbo and tune, but if it has a better IC. it will do much better holding the power. still limited due to the stock IC being massively tiny. for grandmas etc its fine, but you'll be heat soaked everytime you stop for more than few seconds, and it'll always pull power on a wot assuming its not winter or cold out.

double check to see its size.

here's the link for info

https://www.mishimoto.com/ford-mustang-ecoboost-intercooler-2015.html#features

and here's, the links for R/D of it. dyne etc

there's 5 parts to this. but im only posting the 5th part

Conclusion
This concludes out project! We have a very robust, efficient intercooler solution for the EcoBoost Mustang. A summary of the testing results are noted below.

  • 30°F–35°F drop in outlet temperatures
  • Intake temperatures held at no more than 7°F above ambient
  • Minimal pressure drop
  • Average efficiency of 96%
  • 165% increase in external fin surface area
  • 58% increase in core volume

It doesn't come with an upgraded intercooler. I installed an upgraded intercooler.

Ah

so tell me. Did you notice the difference yourself from stock to aftermarket? / would you recommend to someone else with an hpp? I noticed a large difference with ford perf tune from stock ic to Cpe

You are not wrong. I am guessing your GTI was 2010 or newer. VW had a lot of quality issues to deal with, especially electrical. The prioritized making improvements across the board. The difference between a MK4 and 5 are impressive. they continued to do this year over year. The upside was a signifcant improvement in overall quality and refinement. The downside was the refinement was so extreme, it almost eliminated the rawness and bite that was evident in eariler versions. They added a lot of that back into the MK8. Also, not sure what you may have modded on your GTI, but depending on what year yours was, a tune and some suspension tweaks, you could eliminate a lot of the numbness.

As for the Mustang, the S550 also provided some refinement that some will say added numbess and less fun compared to previous models. The end result though, in both the current Mustang and the R is that they are superior in general to previous models. Comparing the Mustang and R is really hard to do as they are quite differnt in what they are meant for. The Mustang is much more meant to be a sports car and the R is meant more for utility. In the end, performance wise they are pretty darn close especially in stock form. Which one you like is up to you though. In my case I like both but for differnt reasons. I don't and would never want to daily my Mustang. Fortunately I don't need a daily driver, but if I did I would choose the R over it as it is in my opinion just better in too many ways for that duty. Also if it were my only car it would magnifiy my choice more. Just my thoughts and I'm sure on this site I would be in the minority and that is ok.:)

I gotta disagree here.

Setting aside the hatch-back/4-door part, the Mustang is a much larger and heavier car. A Mustang also isn't a Sports Car, in the traditional sense. It's a GT, or Grand Tourer. It's for 2 people and tons of luggage, on long trips. Space, pace and grace.

A Golf R is a much smaller/lighter car, closer to what a real Sports Car should be, as represented by a Miata.

I used this one: CVF Street Intercooler (2015-2022 Ford Mustang EcoBoost) – CV Fabrication (CVF)
and noticed to be what felt like an increased throttle response and quicker revs. I havent paid attention to engine bay temps and have not tuned the car yet.

No question about the EB gets better fuel economy. but the 5.0L is still pulling better economy than all those SUVs and trucks everyone now buys šŸ˜„

that. is. GLORIOUS. pp2 or did you add those wheels?
2018 PP2 301A, active exhaust, and Recaros. A little over 4 years and 21K now, and it puts a smile on my face every time I fire it up. I can’t imagine a Mustang with anything but a V8. The active exhaust is glorious. I also have a 2013 F-150 with the 3.5 TT, intake, down pipes, and full cat back. It will beat a lot of cars from stop light to stop light with a boosted 4x4 launch (including my GT). But that wonderful exhaust note of the Coyote just can’t be beat.
