Hello everyone, I've recently have taken a new interest in the car scene.
I went out and traded my 16bmw for my current 19gt.
What I am wanting help on is understanding people who talk about cars, I struck up a convo with a person who had a really nice 17gt pp, but felt inadequate when it came to talking about car parts, and such.
What advice would y'all give someone who is a total newcomer?

Read as much as you can and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Find the local car meets and hang out there and strike up conversations.

YouTube is a great resource too.

These coyote mustangs are relatively new for me. Completely different than the older generation Mustangs I was used to. So I’ve been reading this forum, asking questions and watching a lot of YouTube to help me understand things I didn’t quite understand about the intricacies of them.

Most importantly again is don’t be afraid to ask questions. We were all new to the scene at one point. If anyone gives you a hard time for asking something forget them and move on.

If you're genuinely interested in cars, it'll come on its own - you will look for info and research.

If you're not but want to be part of it or belong - why bother ? Be yourself.

Start doing your own simple maintenance on the car...Learn how to change your oil, air filter rotate tires etc. Get your hands a little dirty. Builds a connection to your car and you learn a hell of a lot. Not sure? Check out youtube, for the answer. Before long you will be kicking the gravel with the best of us!

Pick out a part, something like a CAI (cold air intake). Research that part, learn what
It does. Buy and install YOURSELF.

Buy from forum supporter if possible

Through process or the research of that one part will teach you about other parts that interact with those parts giving you internal knowledge of it all. This also will keep you from accepting untruths which abound from people who do not research.

Installing the part will teach you so much, watching install videos learning proper names for parts etc.. Plus the satisfaction of knowing I installed that ------ my self.

Go to some cars and coffee, stand back and drink your coffee an listen to Mustang people brag and lie about their stangs

Welcome

Do not be afraid to admit you don't know much. It's easy for car guys to sniff out people that are just kind of winging it, but many(non-assholes) are also very happy to help explain what they are talking about to a new guy.

And example I have is when I was heavy into the Ford ZX2/Focus/Contour scene there was a new guy, clearly didn't know about cars, but knew what he liked appearance wise. We ended up good friends because while I was not mechanically inclined I helped him learn about exhausts, intakes, cams, and if I could helped him(with printed out guides) install new parts. Others bagged on him for not being knowledgeable, but if no one explained it to him, he'd never learn. So we'd walk around car shows and he'd point to something and ask what it was, or how it worked, I'd explain it best I could, and if I didn't know I'd suggest he take a picture to post on the forum and ask or Google it. This story just really sticks out in my memory as I had helped him install a kit on his car and new intake, and after I off handed mentioned how I liked his shirt, it was the only shirt printed with a Ford ZX2 on the front and very few were made, and he literally just took it off and gave it to me as a thanks.

Not sure what hes doing now, or what hes driving, but he defiantly goes down as the only guy I've ever met that would literally give you the shirt off his back.

Just ask questions when you are at meets, and don't be afraid to tell people that you are just getting into this and learning about things. Most of the people that you talk to at meets will be receptive to this as we all had to learn at some point.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
Will be reading forums & watching YouTube videos today, any specific YouTuber I should subscribe to?
I really wish there was a bigger car scene in western NC, I missed Ponies in The Smokies this year which was a bummer.
Sadly. None of my family is into cars. "As long as it gets you from point A to B, you're fine" is what they say, but I disagree. I love seeing fixed up cars, how they look, sound, & the power they produce..
And I'm already thinking about doing some small mods here and there, CAI, C-B exhaust, different wheels, & 15% tint.

Learning how to work on your car yourself will also save a lot of labor costs, which then allows for more money to do future mods! It never ends!
