So I am considering doing long tube catted headers. I have an awesome deal lined up on the parts, MBRP through beefcake. Labor too through a buddy of mine. I believe I have a solution for emissions, and if not I’ve got 3 years before I have to deal with it.However, I am having trouble pulling the trigger.Maybe you can help me off the ledge:

Sound…..how much louder will the car be with catted headers over stock manifolds and cats. The car is just about as loud as I want it, it’s a convertible and I pretty much always have the top down.I have the MBRP street exhaust on now.If the car is god awful loud my wife will kill me!Would love to hear some clips of catted headers with a conservative cat back if anyone has them.

Gains…..20rwhp?Enough to be noticeable?Really hoping they’ll help low end.

Install…..My buddy works on European cars and has a lift of his own.He hasn’t done this particular job but says it looks pretty easy compared to the cars he works on. I am little worried he may be underestimating the job.

Every time I've done headers myself I swore it would be the last!

Thanks for the input. Steve

I have the same exhaust as you do. I went with Kooks catted headers. Cold start is pretty loud but it doesn't last long though. My wife complains to me about how loud my car is when I start her up in the morning. Once the car warms up it pretty tame. WOT though is loud but sounds nice though.

Power gains were noticeable to me. Car pulls harder. As far as install, I took it to a shop here in NJ. Installing headers on these cars can be time consuming.

Wow your just the guy I was looking for! Is there any bribe you would accept to get a sound clip for me?

I will try and do a sound clip later on. I'm actually looking at the Krona and the Borla touring systems myself.

Wonderful, thank you.

Are you unhappy with the MBRP?

It's definitely going to be louder, but you're going catted, so it shouldn't be too bad. You can always add a resonator. You'll have gains through the whole curve, so it's worth it to me. Tuning is the important factor. Also consider future mods. If you decide later on you want turbos, hold off on headers and do a gt350 mani and TB. Which is compatible with most turbo and centri kits.

Don't let anyone fool you, it's going to be quite a bit louder. With that said, I love mine. Not sure what the emissions test in your area is like, but if it's an OBD check, even catted headers will fail. A tune can turn off the rear O2s, but that will cause the readiness check to fail as well. Just be prepared to deal with stuff like that if and when you have to do emissions. I went with Kooks green catted headers so that I could avoid all the emissions nonsense (knock on wood), as I live in a state that checks via OBD.

I've helped install headers a few times now. Passenger side is a f'ing pain, driver side... eh, takes a minute but not hard. Remove the battery box, easier to get to the offending nuts that make the passenger side so painful. Be aware of the AC line proximity to the header piping as well... may have to articulate that back a little. It's like a 5+ hour job unless you rinse and repeat installing headers on these cars a lot.

Even catted headers on the same catback I have, which is the quietest Solo makes, is far too loud for me. I'd have to add in some kind of extra mufflers. Don't want to but I may eventually. I don't know... just so loud.

As for power... when I had a stock tune I went against a guy in an 1/8 mile who had headers and obviously a tune and I had a notably better start (which is a miracle in and of itself for me) and he still ended up beating me with my front bumper lined up with his rear bumper. Some perspective on power, I guess. Of course, I am the worst drag racer on earth... so... maybe grain of salt.

i went with kooks catless, i live in fl, no emissions here. currently running the s type catback. as stated, cold starts are loud, normal driving, not bad. hit the gas its loud af. i bought that magnaflow resonator, need to get that put on. power is everywhere, would do it again. and beefcake ftw, best prices, i wont shop around anymore, hes the go to guy for me now

and i paid a local to install, did it in 4.5 hrs in his driveway, hes also done like 30 sets down here, its not bad, its just time consuming
