The Honda type r set the nurburgring record for fwd cars so I wouldn't count that out until you drive it.
It's going to be in the mid 30s...would be out of my price range. I'd think.

The alternatives are things that I can try to wooh my fiancée (my wife in less than 10 days on).
Wait, what? Your fiancée? Is that the real problem here? She's nagging you about your car because you ahem should be spending more money on her?

I did the complete opposite i went from a base Ecoboost to a premium gt. Had to put down 3k to soak up some negative equity but i got what i wanted for a dang good price.

Nothing wrong with going for a premium Ecoboost at all. You could probably find a 2015 premium under 40k miles fairly cheap.

Sounds penny wise and pound foolish to me. And I should know as I bought a V6 to save $10k and then spent $10k to get it to perform like the V8.
I did the same thing back in the 90's with an SN95. Bought the V6 and spent a fortune on GT wheels, exhaust, and tons of other mods. I think it ended up costing me more than a GT cost at the time. I'm doing the same thing with my GT now, I keep buying everything GT350 that I can for the car. It will probably end up costing me more than I could have gotten a GT350 for in the end. :D

-Focus ST. The drawback...it reminds me of a basic Focus...which I hate.
-Fiesta ST. She calls it a 'pinto' bean...I don't really have anything else to add...that and a 6'5 240 pound man...owning one...seems weird!?
-Golf GTI. This is a leading candidate...but I worry it might not be as sporty as I want!? Will it handle as well as I hope?
-EB Mustang. This makes the least sense...like everyone said, why trade down!?
-Civic SI...Honda has completely mishandled the release of this, and the Type R...that, and I don't see the performance wowing me.
Personally I HATED FWD. I loved me 2015 GTI but ultimately after two years of ownership I sold it and bought the Mustang. I miss the nimble GTI but then I start the v8 and forget all about it.

A good friend went from a 2012 GTI to a 2017. He says the VAQ differential is a HUGE improvement in handling and feel. Seems like fwd doesn't have to be quite the penalty it used to be.

Personally I would get completely out of Mustangs for a couple of years, if cost is your issue... all this gas cost is ridiculous (sorry, don't mean to offend).

Get a used base Fiesta and then come back to Mustangs when things are settled down for you. No disrespect... but think of the massive savings with a base fiesta vs. a mustang.

Coworker did this but he has saved so much money he is keeping the fiesta and waiting on maybe the 2021 mustang (well, he also sold the house that was giving him financial fits as well). If you are getting married, that is expensive... oh, man... good luck with that!

Without knowing your complete situation it is difficult to access and determine the best course of action. The first thing I would do is contact your insurance agent and find out the difference in premiums between the Ecoboost and the GT. My guess is that there will not be that big of difference between the two cars. As for fuel, here again you are not going to recoup much in savings between the two vehicles. One thing that will happen is you will probably loose at least $5K or possibly more depending on mileage and condition of your current vehicle.

Now if you just can't afford to drive it then I would put it on the market and sell it. Pay off your loan and take any equity you have in the vehicle and use it towards a more economical vehicle. Another option is to look at your total expenses and determine things you could possibly live without and use that money towards your current vehicle. For instance we used to go out to lunch each day and now I carry my lunch with me when I go to work. On average I save around $125 a month just from doing that. I know it sounds silly, but it adds up!

You will lose decent money on the trade, not smart to sell/trade so soon into ownership.

I don't think the savings between the EB and GT will be enough to justify the downgrade unless you do projected numbers over very long term ownership.

If you really want to cut down and save on gas, insurance and payments, then a new Premium EB Mustang isn't going to be your best choice. Plenty of cheaper cars that serve as good daily drivers well under the $20k mark if you buy low mileage used.

Just my 0.02.

That is like going from having sex on a consistent basis with Adriana Lima to Queen Latifah. To each their own.

Found a EB fully loaded, all black (beautiful) and they want 27 for it...Tempting...Again, not really sure. Seems like it would save me about 1500 a year on gas.
WarrENDeatH.....Please keep the LB GTPP i remember seeing pics when you bought and being jealous of the color for 17! And a tip from experience, the mpg difference in between a gt and a ecoboost is a whopping 2 mpg or less sometimes the 5.0 gets better than the eco! Please dont do it man..

Just curious, what are your assumptions regarding your fuel and insurance savings? You mentioned $1,500/year saved in fuel. Just curious how you got to that number. I did some quick math and here's what I came up with. (if its wrong someone please correct me)

I have a V6 and average about 25mpg on regular, so I'm using that as a "benchmark" of sorts. I am assuming I'd average about the the same with the EB, and about 20 mpg with the GT, using regular. I'm using 15,000 miles a year of driving and 2.40/gallon for regular and 2.80/gallon for premium (what I'd pay locally). Your inputs will be different obviously but I'm just displaying an illustration based on my experience/assumptions.
GT: 15,000 / 20= 750 gallons. 750 x 2.40= $1,800
V6: 15,000 / 25= 600 gallons. 600 x 2.40= $1,440 ($360 savings)
EB: 15,000 / 25= 600 gallons. 600 x 2.80= $1,680 ($120 savings)

Factor in maybe a $100-200 savings in insurance each year, and you're not looking at a huge reduction of expenses. You'll lose a lot more if you trade in. If you do want to make a swap, your best choice I think would be to sell as a private sale, and then pick up a lightly used model of one of the ones you're considering. From your list I'd go with the GTI. A 16 or 17 model with the PP should go in the $20-22k range and you'll likely average 30 mpg (on premium). Its a lot of fun to drive and very practical. Just make sure you have a decent warranty to protect you. I don't have any experience with the others on the list but I'm sure they're fun. If you have another car in the household and can handle something even less practical and loud, an ND miata would be my suggestion. I had one, the most fun I've had on four wheels. Averaged 34mpg

good luck on your decision.
Well written post and this is the same thing I thought. My GT350 is getting 19.1 lifetime with mixed city/highway and 1 track day in the past year and a half. Very similar to the fuel economy I got with a GT. I bet if I had an ECOboost I would get very similar as well, because I'd just be stepping on it more.

Suggesting buying a used replacement is smart as well. I wouldn't buy a VW, but they do have nice interiors and that seems like the priority for the OP. I'm all about performance and I think the base GT has a plenty nice enough interior.

I'm only seeing a 2-3mpg difference between my Eco and my GT and I drove them the same. My insurance only went up $40 for 6 months on the GT but that will change once I pay my speeding ticket 66/45 :frusty:.

To be honest tho the interior does make a big difference in daily driving for me going from base to premium but if I already had a base GT I wouldn't trade it on a premium Eco. The dealer gave me 16,500 for my base Eco with 27k miles. I put down 3k to eat some neg equity. so I lost some money but well worth it.

My 2015 premium GT was 26k with 32k miles came with nav, 401a extra security package, blind spot, 20" foundry wheels. The car new was just over 43k only know this because I found the paper work in the glove box. I pay roughly a $110 extra monthly payment with gap/warranty.

I only posted this to show you that the savings will be minimal and you might end up spending more. If you really want to save money go buy a new Corolla for around 18k my wife drives a 15 bought it new and it's dirt cheap and a nice economic car or just keep the GT
