I am looking for advise and opinions here. My brand new 2016 Premium GTPP is getting a new short-block installed by the dealer. I first reported a knocking noise to the dealer at 2500 miles the day after they did her first oil change. Timeline is like this:

Took it in for the first oil change and the next morning I could hear a tapping noise when she warmed up at idle so I took it back to the dealer. They kept it for 4 days only to give it back telling me they could not work on it until I removed my oil air separator. So I took her back home.

Two weeks goes by and I take it back. This time they keep it for 8 days (up to 12 total now) and they give her back telling me they could not reproduce the issue. I make the Service Director write on the ticket that he heard the sound when I dropped it off. I take her home and watch the videos from her time there that my dash cam captured. In one video a tech takes her up to about 100MPH on the highway and then back to the shop. He does nothing and backs her out of the shop where she sits for 5 days. Then another drive and she sits again. Last day she was there the service director takes her for a drive and pull it in the shop. He calls a couple tech over and gets back in the car you can hear on the video the techs saying "Thats Odd" and the Service Director saying "Yeah I can feel it in the shifter". So I got great video of them admitting to the issue yet they gave me the car back with the ticket saying "Could not reproduce the issue".

After watching these videos I call the General Manager of the dealer and send him copies. He is more than happy to have me bring the car back in, take me to the airport, pick me up from the airport after my trip and give me a rental car. Imagine that after watching videos of his guys admitting to the issue and driving my car 100MPH he is willing to help out a bit.

Now we are at today. She is still in the shop and has been since the 13th (as of today that is 30 days AND three attempts to repair by the dealer). They told me they have a new ShortBlock that just came in for her and it should be ready in about 5 working days. My issue is I am nervous about my brand new car I purchased on August 17th having the engine replaced by a guy who apparently didnt want ot work on it in the first place. I would feel better had it been a complete intake to oil pan engine but a short block well there is a lot they can mess up.

Options
1. take it when its ready
2. Call Ford and try to get a swap for another 2016
3. lemon it and be done.

I have had mustangs since I was 16 years old and am 43 now. I have always had great luck and love the cars. Only two issues I have ever had were with the one I traded for this one (2014 Track Pack GT with a rear end they rebuild 5 times) and this one with a bad engine and she had the drive-line vibration but I fixed that myself by squaring up the IRS.
I am just at a loss

Honestly if that was me, it'd be option #3. The car will never be the same not to mention the dealership will not be able to bring the car back to its original factory state. The service departments obvious attempt to circumvent the inevitable speaks volumes. :tsk: Kudos to the GM for stepping up to the plate but at the end of the day, all that jumping through the hoops would just bother me.

Had to be a coincidence ... just can't see why an oil change would lead to a new short block. Although, more than a few people have reported the "BBQ tick" after the first oil change. Nobody knows exactly why.

Is the dealer going to tear down the original motor to see if they can determine what's wrong inside?

they did and I am waiting on the pictures. Ford was worried about 2 cylinders is all I know right now.

I have the idea of lemoning it but I may have too. I wouldnt give any Kudos to the GM do you know what a shit storm it would be for them if I gave the videos of them admitting the car needed work and the videos of them driving it over 100MPH to the local news. Not to mention show their insurance company a video of a tech driving a car like that and show Ford?

I think if it was me, I'd lean towards option 3 as well but then go buy another one a a DIFFERENT dealer!

After that circus, I wouldn't be able to trust that dealer. And take the oil separator off first? Please! Plus, you know if you ever take it back there the quality of service you will get.

Buy from a different dealer and use them for service. I'd talk to the service manager before your purchase to get an idea how they will be to work with.

I talked with Ford CS and told them I wanted it swapped out. they LOVED the dashcam videos of the tech driving high speeds and the Service Director admitting there was an issue before giving me the car back the 2nd time

OMG... dealers really need to get their people in check and stop this "we can't replicate" crap. There was a time when dealers had 3 diagnostic techs. Now most have 1 by directive from Ford. Therein lies your problem.

The problem is the whole dealer network in the first place. Direct sales is how it should be. Support directly from the manufacturer. The dealership model has been broken for decades. It needs to stop.

I agree and couldn't agree more. Now I shall see how the regional ford manager handles this.
1 gives me another 2016 like mine
2 has me lemon it and I send the videos to fox 17 and the dealers insurance company.

well the ford CSM called me and has talked to the Service adviser and the GM of the dealer. She said it will be up to 10 days to review for a good faith buy back and I let her know they could do that or lemon it and it was up to them.

Crazy story. I'd go with option 2 or 3 as this will likely lower the value of your car.:tsk:

Curious what the dealer cost is going to be for a short block install/labor?

no idea their cost. I am really pushing to get a swap out of the car I do not want it back now. How can I trust the dealers work?

Did the mechanics know you have a dash cam recording? I don't believe you can record audio without their consent.

100 mph sounds like joy riding to me. What's the speed limit of the road they were on ? That speed could be reckless driving.
