It is currently illegal in all states for Ford to have a direct sale model. This is because all of the states have laws in place that prevent a MFR from competing with its own dealers. If you want to buy directly from Ford, you MUST get the government involved, in order to change the laws.
Tesla is able to avoid this because they don't have any of their own dealers to compete against. Therefore they are allowed to sell direct.
However, the dealership lobby is trying to get the laws changed (and they have been successful in many states). Typically they try to "refine" the existing law preventing a MFR from competing with ITS dealers, to state that a MFR cannot compete with ANY dealer. This effectively prevents any MFR from selling anywhere since there will always be one dealer (even from a different brand) in that state.
I'm sure the MFR's would love the options of a direct sales model in certain cases, but it is just not legal at this time. So it definitely is a government issue and no amount of whining to Ford will change things. Of course, the best way to push change though the government is with lobbying dollars, so it's difficult for individuals to compete with large lobbying groups on that front.
I do think the GT350 will start off with ADM's in most popular markets, but I am hopeful that they will go away relatively quickly (less than 6 months).
