Gapless rings

I have been looking and have not found any coyotes using gapless rings. Does anybody know of an example of this or have any experience with this?

The issue, for me at least, would be the ring land area of the piston. I had my stock .009 gapped rings get where they were essentially gapless at about 7500rpm due to boost and heat and THIS happened...

I'm familiar with the concept, but not the practice. Literally every thread I pulled up or article I read was years old. Like way old.

- Can be difficult to setup
- Offer no clear benefit
- Sometimes detrimental (see initial point)

A quality set of pistons with traditional rings, matched well for the needed application, offer proven performance and reliability; this was my take.

The car wasn't pulling as hard as it was a few minutes before while racing 2 GT500's from a roll of about 60mph and I let off at about 110ish. When I did, I heard an audible pop and the check engine light started flashing, the AC started cycling on and off and the engine sounded, smelled and felt like it had a misfire situation. I limped it home about 75 miles. You can read a little more detail about it here.

If a gapless ring expands due to heat what is going to happen to the top of the piston where it has a weak point?

From what I understand gapless rings, go hand-in-hand with gas porting, because gas porting can give you a little less seal PTW for pulling in coming air. The gapless rings seem to give that back.

same idea with boosted applications since you have to have a large gap in the rings. having a gapless ring covers that gap so you can run a large gap for boost without having a large leak in the ring

I wouldn’t expect it to just give you extra power, but I do think that it would have benefits especially boosted applications by allowing you to run a large gap in the rings without losing cylinder pressure through the gap in the ring
This is just my theory. I was hoping to find confirmation.

You can also order gapless rings from total seal that are gas ported on the ring

They don't really do much. It falls into the % error range of dyno's. We tried them when they first came out and saw no increases in lap times or longevity. Our engine builder tried them in top only, top and second and both. Everything lost high RPM power except top ring only.

In a boosted application with lots of time at WOT they might be a benefit as opposed to a very wide gap normal ring.

There is a reason they are not heavily advertised anymore.
