I’ve always loved this car, but there was one thing that constantly bothered me — the Flowmaster Outlaw exhaust. Most of the time it sounded amazing, but the drone at 2,000 RPM was unbearable on longer drives.
After hours and hours of research, I started learning about Helmholtz chambers and quarter-wave resonators. I discovered that by adding a properly calculated section of pipe to the existing exhaust, I could keep the same aggressive exhaust volume while eliminating the resonance/drone that was causing all the discomfort.
With the help of ChatGPT, I was able to come up with a solid game plan and work through all the complex formulas needed to determine the exact pipe length required (24.5” is what we needed up with).
Over the last week, I finally built and installed a quarter-wave resonator system — and it completely canceled out the drone at 2,000 RPM. The car is now significantly more enjoyable to drive while still sounding exactly how I wanted.
While we had everything apart, we also decided to sand and repaint the exhaust tips gloss black. They were matte black before, and honestly they never looked quite right to me.
Huge thank you to Greg Hale for all the help getting this project done. Also wanna thank Kristi Adair for putting up with my shenanigans.
In the pictures is my research images and ChatGPT’s layout recommendations and then photos of what we ended up doing. My total cost $170.
