First Service

I'm just at 300 miles and still breaking it in. I plan on my first service at 1,000, oil & filter. Do you take your Bullitt to the dealer or another shop for service? My past experience with dealer service over the last 30 years has not been great, but maybe things have changed.

It's easier to make a warranty claim if you have all your services in the system at the dealer. Showing them receipts from other places or doing it yourself sometimes works, but it's a lot easier for them to pass the blame on to you or the other shop if anything should go wrong. I'm taking mine to the dealer and doing services by the book (meaning no oil change till 5,000).

Dealer here too. Last two cars '06 Jetta and '13 Escape, all service done at the dealer I bought the car from. This way, if there is an issue, they can't point the finger somewhere else. Will do my first oil change in April, which will be around 3,000km. Picked up Castrol Edge on a Black Friday deal. Dealer will do the work, and I will supply the oil. Bullitt will be serviced where I bought it, which is same as the Escape. You can't beat having a relationship with your service dept.

Inching up on my first service and undecided on where to go. I want to go the the closest dealer but that is where I first ordered and then cancelled my order. Maybe that won't matter on the service side? Or, would I be better off just finding another Ford dealership top go to?

My first service is on the dealer so I'll go where I bought it, but after that it's going to another Ford dealer where good friend is the tech.

Go to the closer store. They will do their job just like you do at your place of employment.
Personnel on the front of the store is typically a revolving door, start a positive relationship with the service department there. Unless of course you think they are not qualified.

Why change at 1k miles? Just curious.

I’ll change at 5000. I had a 2012 GTCS convertible with a 6 speed manual. Did the first change to full synthetic at 1500 miles and always felt it took longer to break it in.

For folks wanting to change at 1000 miles, take a look at my used oil analysis results from my previous '15 GT thread. I wanted to verify the service recommendations were sufficient by actually seeing the metal content in the oil over time. I plan to go to the dealership where I normally get service in OH since I bought my '19 Bullitt in MI. I am at about 2700 miles on it, so I've got a bit to go before I do an oil change.

Is the dealer fine with you bringing your own oil? I've checked out Tony's oil analysis and the Ford Motorcraft blend seems to do fine but I'd rather run my preferred oil instead of the dealer is cool with it. Not sure if that would affect the warranty, but I'm guessing it should be fine.

It wont effect warranty unless you're running some pull thats way out of spec.

That said, they're not, or barely, profiting off the LOS. what incentive do they have to use your oil that they couldn't mark up?

Yes, I was there on Tuesday, getting snows on my Escape, and was talking to my Service advisor about the Bullitt, and that I wanted full synthetic oil. I was asking him about the cost of the service, and he said, if I supplied my own oil, I would just pay for the labour....

I am pretty sure all common oil's are warranty approved. I will put in 5w20 per the manual.

I'm sure not every dealer is OK with it....

I'm going to do the first oil/filter service at 1,000 miles (currently at 800). More than the oil, I want to cut open the filter and carefully examine the residue. This is common in aviation; I cut open the filter on my airplanes every 25 flight hours... and more than once have been surprised at the amount of metal (ferrous and non-ferrous) in the filter after a new/rebuilt engine. I'll use Pennzoil 5w20 full synthetic. I've already drained the trans oil, and replaced it with BG Synchro Shift II. I may change the rear axle oil at 1,000 miles too, but am still looking into what makes the Torsen happy. The nearest dealer is 80 miles distant, but I have a lift in my shop :-)

Many many years ago I worked in a garage that did a lot of upgrades for hot cars. I watched the head mechanic cut open oil filters and saw the metal fillings in the filter. So after reading the above, for my first service I'll stick with my 1,000 mile rule. After that I'll stick with the Ford recommended milage.
