How would the Borla S type axleback (using the stock resonator) compare to the Borla Touring catback in volume? I love all the sound clips I've heard of the S setup but I don't have a feel for its level of volume. I don't plan on going with an X or H pipe in the future. I have done a LOT of research but I really value opinions from actual experience. Bill at CJ's seems to be a big fan of the S.

So I have the Borla Touring catback now, but just came from the Borla S-Type axlebacks with factory resonator in place. I can tell that the Borla Touring catback is a tad louder than the S-Type axleback/factory resonator, but not much. With the Borla resonator in the Touring catback you get a tad louder volume overall, a few more burbles when slowing down, and a little more growl in the mid-high RPM range. I would say the S-Type axlebacks with factory resonator are about 80% as loud as the Borla Touring. The Borla Touring catback for me provides a great sound and this is the one I'll be sticking with as this is my DD. The S-Type axlebacks sound great as well and would be a cheaper option if you're buying new. The only pain when installing the S-Type axlebacks was cutting the factory exhaust pipe.

Where in Texas are you located?

Thanks for the detailed description! I'm in the Forney area. Many people seem to be happy with the volume level of the Touring, hence my question. I wanted something with better volume than stock but don't like the raspiness of a res delete.

Borla Touring and S-Type have the same mufflers so the main difference in sound would be from the resonator. OEM resonator would be quieter than the Borla.

You may know something I do not but if that is true, what makes the Touring catback w/X pipe different than the S type w/X pipe? Is the Touring system w/resonator (instead of X pipe) a different animal?

While we are on the subject can someone definitively answer this about axle backs:

S type Borla = Sport FRPP ?
Touring Borla = Touring FRPP ?

I've read differing opinions.

I tried to contact Borla with that question but ever got an answer. The price diff is only $40 bucks for the nicer beveled tips on the FRPP. It would certainly be worth it to me.

Borla Touring does not have an X-pipe it has a Borla resonator. Only the S-type and Atak have x-pipes.

Also
Borla S-type = FRPP Sport
Borla Touring are not FRPP Touring (I believe there is a muffler difference but I know for a fact that the FRPP has an X-pipe and Borla has a resonator)

There seems to be a slight tone difference between Borla branded exhaust and FRPP.

Ok. I have confused the FRPP Borla with Borla.

Anyway, it seems my original question got answered at least regarding the S type muffler. Thanks again.

I've scoured YouTube for Touring muffler axleback clips and have noticed that people almost always add an X pipe. That makes me think the Touring axle back w/factory resonator must be a very quiet (too quiet?) setup. There are several videos of the S type with the same setup. I dont want to be the guy you hear coming from a mile off, and keeping the factory resonator seems to have that result based on my reading.

I'm telling myself, "Buy the freakin thing already!" I think exhaust changes are the hardest mods to choose.

I have the S-Type and my initial impression was "louder than I thought". It's not that loud but loud enough though no drone. If you are concerned about being loud, I think the Borla Touring is what you are after. Also the Borla resonator looks to be like an h-pipe type design inside. There's a picture here somewhere of the touring resonator.

I don't think Borla S-Type = FRPP Sport, but I could be mistaken. I believe there are 4 different mufflers made by Borla for the S550:
  1. Borla S-Type and Touring muffler
  2. Borla ATAK muffler
  3. FRPP by Borla Touring muffler
  4. FRPP by Borla Sport muffler

I've heard all but the ATAK in person and the FRPP Touring and FRPP Sport have more higher pitched rasp than the Borla S-Type and Borla Touring. There's definitely a little sound difference between the FRPP by Borla and the regular Borla exhausts.

I just installed the Corsa Sport it is loud only after 3500 rpm but the rest of the time it is just a bit louder than stock but with a deeper rumble perfect exhaust that screams muscle car but doesnt get nasty hoa letters about loud exhaust but under WOT it is loud people at work know when I leave!

Yes the Borla S-Type axle back mufflers are the same mufflers that come with both Borla S-Type CATBACK and Boral Touring CATBACK.
You can see the part numbers are the same on the Borla web site if you download the install instructions and check the bill of materials.
The only difference as stated before is that the S-Type CATBACK comes with an X-Pipe and the Touring CATBACK comes with the Borla mid-pipe muffler (resonator), but otherwise they both come with S-Type axle back mufflers.

You can also buy the Borla S-Type axle backs separately and install on OEM exhaust, leaving the Ford OEM resonator and mid-pipes. This makes your setup basically the same as a Borla Touring exhaust ...but costs less.

Same with the Borla ATAK axle backs...they could also be put on OEM exhaust.

The FRPP Touring and Sport are made by Borla for FORD but they are not quite the same as either the S-Type or ATAK.
Most of the vendors on this forum that sell these will tell you they are not the same.

I talked to a vendor and they thought the S and the Sport have a different sound. I've gotten more recommendations to do the S type for an otherwise stock system than the Touring. As long as it doesn't drone the volume level isn't really a huge deal. I'm after something deeper with a good tone. The stock sound is too subdued. It is so close to right but IMO lacks some deepness and good volume when you put the hammer down.
