I love the more refined mustang, thats why I bought one. Never would of considered one before now. What ford has done is widened its customer base IMO.
Packages make sense to me. There are still options for each budget.
Not feeling love for packages either, but I am used to it as Japanese car companies did that to me since '92 and my last car was Korean, and same with packages.

Plus, I wanted better audio, but couldn't justify the cost (it sounded nicer, but not $1700 nicer) to wife. But she said if we are getting manual, she wants memory seats... yae, audio option! ;)

And then there is PP, which I really wanted but this was my DD for NYC area and the "summer only tires kindkinda was a dealbreaker.

As for spoiler, I used to be a fan of spoilers when young, and I thought, "bigger the better". Now I feel like unless it's large enough to actually generate useful downforce, I like the "clean look" of the spoiler-less rear end (of some cars). I think the side profile of the rear of 6th Gen is gorgeous (kinda reminiscent if aston martin or less exaggerated version of older supra).

As for the sound, I have EB, but the GT I testdrove sounded very much similar to the 5th Gen 5.0, which I think sounds wonderful. I also think the Mustang has been "refined" to euroupean/Japanese tastes, especially the ppremium interior.

When I park mine at the wine store and catch people from camaro owners to audi A5 owners staring into my window, I believe Ford did something right. I could understand that prev-gen owners may feel like Ford took away the almost spartan interior of American "muscle car", but I totally agree with Apwrx that ford seems to have widened the potential customer base, and you know that's a good thing because now I feel like advocating the 6th-gen mustang to everyone I know

If you like "fluff", you pay for it...A la carte would be nice but the only pkg that matters is PP. The rest is, well, fluff...

Packages are a wonderful concept - not for you, but for Ford. They manage to spread every option that anybody wants across all of the packages. e.g. I'm a believer in safety, so I wanted big brakes (probably overkill I realize), collision warning and blind-spot monitoring. Those three items might cost $3,000 separately but together the three packages total over $6,000. Likewise, to get any of that stuff you have to get the $3,000 Premium level, which contains a bunch of ~nice~ things which few people would buy all together if they were offered separately. So Ford has extracted like $6,000 out of me paying for stuff I don't need - even on my custom order! I'm not mad, that's just the way it is with a high-volume, low base-price car. Still about $14,000 cheaper than the 4 series I was considering.

It also simplifies the manufacturing process to offer as few standalone options as possible. Instead of billions of possible combinations, there are merely hundreds (someone would have to check the actual math on that to get the real numbers).

Finally, sometimes packages legitimately overlap in their equipment requirements. For example, active cruise and collision warning. Or bigger wheels and bigger brakes - those have to go together. Sometimes Ford doesn't want to spend the additional R&D money on testing cars with X equipment that doesn't have Y equipment, in case they might depend on each other in some difficult-to-see way.

As for the Mustang's new refinement - I don't get why so many people complain about this. It's easy to take a quiet, comfortable ride, gut the exhaust and turn it into a monster. But it's hard to take a loud car and turn it into something that doesn't sound offensive when you drive it down Main Street.

As someone who hasn't liked Mustangs since the Foxbody came out, I now like the new Mustang because I feel it has more in common with the original than with the loud-exhaust small-engine sedans and hatchbacks that were around from the mid-70s until 2005. Finally it's once again a car almost any driver can own and use every day, and that really improves its image.

First off, GREAT post. For anyone complaining about people complaining, how do you think the car is going to get better? Is Ford suppossed to guess at what we don't like?

1. Couldn't agree more. I would've gotten the upgraded stereo, but I hate memory seats, rain sensing wipers, and back-up "alarms". On the flip side I hate power seats, but I wanted the other features of a Premium.

Also, I've had two '88 5.0 LX's so I know where you're coming from.

2. I personally hate the spoiler and will have to wait 3 months because Ford is too stupid to make it an option. It could even be a dealer installed option as well as a factory one. It's a LOT easier to put one on than take it off. I can't believe Ford still has this ridiculous "spoiler delete" option.

As for people's cars being delivered wrong, I haven't read any examples, but I certainly wouldn't accept the car with one. Yep, I'd wait another 3 months.

3. I'm getting old and a loud exhaust on the highway is tiring now. There are plenty of aftermarket choices out there. Personally, I think you should welcome the quiet stock exhaust just so you can make the car more your own.

4. No comment.

5. I've only test driven a '15 once and didn't notice anything. Hopefully it won't bother me when mine gets here.

Yes, please
For me it's a double edged sword.

Having driven the 5th Gen, I didn't like the driving position, lack of options like a telescoping steering wheel and the overall interior quality. Being a very tall person, I also couldn't get the seats low enough to see well through the front window. In my opinion, the solid rear to me made the car handle poorly on irregular surfaces and curves. It was disconcerting compared to other performance vehicles when driven hard.

The 6th Gen addressed all of those issues.

However, I do miss the rawness of the older generation(s). The new ones need mods to make them sound and "feel" fast. The refinement kind of robs them of a bit of that feeling that endeared me to the old muscle cars. This is true of more than just Mustangs though.

Packages are just a way for Ford to make more money on its customers. I personally just want options that add to the handling of the car, not more technology or weight. Not a big fan of the black rims of the PP either.

Ford could care less what a handful of guys in a chat forum like. We all still bought the car and they made the profit.

Thanks. I am doing it later today. It sounds like everybody agreed it made it much better.
The difference is night and day. Finally drove mine this morning and WOW...shifts so much better and the feel is great.

My spoiler-delete car has no spoiler. The only PP cars WITH spoilers also have the 50th AP package. I really doubt Ford gets this wrong much, but there are options that override spoiler delete and could surprise the unsuspecting.
