So I recently just got the sync 3 installed in my base s550. I’m gonna try to play with forscan and activate the drive mode.

My question is, is it actually gonna work and make a difference or it just gives the satisfaction of making the switch work?

It makes a difference. You will notice a different acceleration pattern in different modes and some of the safety stuff is not as aggressive controlling your car.

Updated my base to SYNC 3 and activated the drive modes. Noticed it makes changes to the active exhaust and changes the way the transmission shifts.

If this is an automatic. The main difference is the shift aggressiveness with the torque converter and throttle response. Also all the active stuff (dampers, exhaust, steering) is for both auto/manual.

except you can't get AE on a base car, nor MR. The only missing aspect for 300A 6MT is throttle curve. But you do know that base cars have 'sport' mode - just double-tap the center button. I don't know if that changes throttle map at all since I have an aftermarket tune - haven't noticed anything.

You absolutely can get AE on a “base” car: both with 300A and 301A. I have it on my 301A.

Sport mode on my 6MT definitely changes the throttle mapping - much more responsive vs Normal.

301A is NOT a base car. As soon as you add AE it requires 301A. Base car is by definition 300A/100A and it has the old-timey buttons and no toggles and 4" screen.

correct, on 101A/301A/400A/401A. Does not apply to X00A cars.

It REALLY does NOT require 301A for AE. Go to the configurator right now and try it. You can select AE in the "Exterior" section without it selecting 301A.

Here is a screenshot of the summary for the car I just configured like that. Note the 300A and the AE!

Defintetly makes a difference. I activated the drive modes in my 19 GT Base Manual and in Sport+ and Track theres a big difference in throttle response.
