I had a 18 F150 and it was horrible- clunky, jerky and generally a steaming pile of... The ZF that Chrysler uses is probably the gold standard. Super smooth in my Challenger and Ram. The 9sp in my Frontier is in between. Not as bad as the F150 but nowhere near as good as the ZF and it is a Mercedes trans that they build under lic. I'm sure a lot of it is in the programming since no one would buy a Mercedes with something that shifted like my Nissan. Nissan should have just paid Mercedes to do the software since they obviously can't.

After getting a tune from Wengerd, it shifts pretty smoothly in D.

Nobody in a mustang has a smooth trans. The camaro is 10x better and Im not kidding.
I don’t have any idea about a Camaro and don’t care. But I’d guess the bold part above is likely true.

I have two A10s, one in a 2020 GT and the other in a 2023 Mach 1. They’re both rough as a cob. [If you need historical reference ask an older southerner what that means.] Anyway, mine run exclusively in track mode, period, so that probably accounts for some of it. But truthfully I like it that way. I’m not looking for smooth.

Only thing I’d change if I could is a ridiculously aggressive and unnecessary 3-2 downshift in the Mach when going downhill under braking.

Funny thing, ALL of that can be changed in the tune. I have switched over to tuning my own car and have spent literally MONTHS trying to refine the trans tune. You have no idea how many tables and values there are for every inch of a shift. The TCC settings alone are in the thousands of values. I would pay REAL MONEY to a tuner that could refine the trans out for any driving scenario not just WOT. Look, this is from the tune.

This is one tab of one sub category in the trans only. #goodluck

And @young at heart heres the table for what you're talking about... Try to figure that shit out.

Nobody in an untouched mustang has a smooth trans.
Corrected. If you read some of the other responses on here (and a few different threads) there are solutions to make it smoother. Not Bentley smooth, but a helluva lot better. Never driven a Camaro either to compare to that, but I would imagine it's similar.

I had a new 21 GT with an A10 that was terribly harsh. I got a 93 tune from Wengerd Performance and all shift modes were incredible smooth.

Well #1, look up.

And #2, the camaro is worlds and I mean worlds better in terms of trans tuning from the factory. The hardware might be similar or the same, but the way its managed is completely different. I owned two 10L90 camaro ZL1's and they are like caddys compared to the mustang 10R80. When I first went to get a new mustang, I thought the first 10R80 car I drove was broken. Then drove another and it felt the same...lol

When I first got the car it was jerky as many others reported. I did 3 things that while individually only made small increments on their own, overall really transformed the unit:

- topping off the pan as it was about 1qt low from the factory
- Ford Performance tune (or any other good tuner)
- resetting/disabling adaptive learning parameters

Is it perfectly smooth now? No...but it's significantly improved over when I first got it.
How did you disable the adaptive learning?

My '22 GT A10 is smooth in D, and firm yet smooth(except 1-2, 2-3 shifts part throttle) in track. I don't like the nonlinear throttle mapping of S. I've had 2 other Ford A10s. One in an '18 F150 5.0 that was incredibly smooth, never had a harsh shift once. And the other was in a '22 F250 7.3 and that was by far the smoothest trans I've ever had! Half the time you couldn't tell that it shifted unless you were looking at the tach or gear indicator.

You need the Forscan software and some sort of OBD2 adapter. There's thread on it, and the positive results prompted me to try it even though the shifting was quite smooth after the other 2 things I did.
Is Forscan a device & software that needs to be purchased? Noob question

Yes, it is very smooth.

My experience with every automatic car is that you have the know the difference between the right and left pedal and use them accordingly.
If you slam or stomp on them, the trans is going to shift poorly. But that is true for any automatic transmission.

The only thing I would change in mine is the 1 -> 3 shift that's too early, especially when you get off speed bumps it buggers me a little.

No transmission is perfect but this is a very good one.

No the software is free, but you might have to buy an OBD2 scanner or dongle if you don't already have one. A basic one is like $20-40 on Amazon.
Right on, thanks

Mine has never been smooth but it improved with a TSB software update last summer. On mine 3-4 and 4-5 can be a bit harsh in Sport Mode etc. Reading the S650 forums it seems the A10 shift strategy is much improved with those so whether its a hardware or software change or both is hard to say. I suspect its improved software though.
