I love the GT350 and Voodoo engine, but could not afford a 30k engine replacement or Voodoo shortages worst case which is why I ended up with a Mach with a Ford ESP. When it comes to reliability though, which one is Ford putting into work trucks and continuing with production? That sort of gives me my answer.

I don't think putting a Voodoo engine in a work truck was ever given any thought at Ford corporate.

Hey I get it. My first GT350 seized while driving home from work. Wasn't getting on it at all, just casually driving from light to light. However now I'm selling my Mach 1 HP for a GT350R HE. I'm hoping the 2nd Gen will treat me better.

I’m hoping it will treat you well too. They are amazing cars and if I could have gotten a warranty on one I’d of pulled the trigger, but it would’ve really screwed me at my age to have to replace a voodoo out of pocket haha.

The key is what one Ford kept in production and what one they dropped.

What's your point? The Voodoo was always going to be a limited run. Shit, the Trinity V8 was damn-near bulletproof and just as tough as the 5.0, they still dropped it.

As a parting thought, all corporate decisions are based around profits, be it short-term or long-term.
Ford definitely built a brand with the Voodoo. I have no doubt that it was costly to engineer, build and repair.
Before the S550 hit production, there is little doubt that bean counters at Ford calculated that a standard engine and a race-inspired engine would add to the brand and make them $$.
There are numerous brands and singular drivetrains that rolled on forever; like a Maytag washer. But the promise of “new and improved” sells.
I feel fortunate to have decided to buy a 350. Regardless of what happens, I will keep it, drive it, then pass it down.
My son is just getting the hang of a stick. Hopefully he develops the same reverence for Ford’s accomplishment.
As I am easing into retirement, the last thing I want is a Prius or Volvo..

There was a website that did that, back about 6 or 7 years ago. It was put up by a GT350 owner that looked at the real failure rates of Voodoo engines by model year.

He put the time in to look at and cross-check the reports on YouTube and forums so that multiple reports of the same engine failure were not counted more than once. It was an epic task, given the popularity at the time of "my Voodoo failed" reports on social media.

it's gone now, but his analysis was that the 2015/16 engines were about as reliable as any other GT engine, but the 2017/18 engines were a lot more trouble-prone. Since then, 2019/20 engines have been thought of as "best in class" but the early 2015/16 engines (developed and qualified by FP directly without the help of Ford cost-management engineers) were every bit as good.

If you know your stuff, you should probably know that "second generation" is no better than the "first generation." My 2016 GT350 has had no issues and uses NO oil (i.e., does not need any oil between oil changes).

What I know about my '16 that I had is that it shit the bed at 3K miles. That's the stuff I know, and I know that Ford knows its stuff which is why there is a 2nd gen voodoo. And the market knows its stuff which is why 19-20 cars go for more.

ermahgerd, same…and mine has almost 10k miles with a procharger, funny anecdote she burns LESS oil since adding the blower

If I remember right the early engines had low tension rings. So adding a blower increase ring seal. Ford basically put racing engines in these and kept the out dated break in procedure.
