Dash Cam Hardwiring Question?

Hello everyone, i recently ordered the Vantrue E2 Dash cam for my 2020 mustang GT. And I would like to hard wire it with the kit Vantrue sells. Problem is, I’ve NEVER messed with fuses. I’m afraid I’ll blow one or mess something up. I asked for quotes from shops, and I’ve gotten quotes from 300 to 412.. which to me is a little high. So I want to do it myself but I wanted to go on here and see if I can get any tips? (https://a.co/d/0Vk80s0)

I used a dongle from Dongar Technologies. It is a plug and play kit that wires into the rear view mirror wiring (mine has adaptive cruise stuff in there). It is a very easy kit to install and extremely clean...

Because I came off of the mirror 12v, I had to install a 12v-to-5v USB adapter for the Vantrue. Don't try to connect 12v directly to the camera it WILL fry the camera.

Keep in mind that the power to the mirror is switched-power, so there's no power to the camera when the vehicle is off.

I just installed the Vantrue E3 to my Mustang yesterday. It took me roughly about 45 minutes for the full install. I'll take a look at my fuse taps to see exactly where the Battery and ACC fuse taps are tapped into and I'll report back shortly. I'll also try to send pictures as well.

That sort of fuse kit is pretty easy to install. The fuse box is on the passenger side footwell, so its not hard to sneak the cable up the A pillar and along the window roofline.

The fuses part isn't anything to be worried about. The fuse box is all about NOT exploding, it would be very hard to screw it up.

Looks like you are trying to install it with a park mode? In which case you'll need to know which two fuses to piggyback on to (one powered all the time, one powered only when the car is on)

If you had a 5v cam and the right rearview mirror, the dongar adapter is way easier than dealing with the fuse box, but the fuse box is not very hard to figure out. Have fun!

I have the battery fuse tap on fuse 32 and the ACC fuse tap on 23 on my passenger side fuse panel. I also have the hardwire kit set for 12 volts so if the battery ever drops below that it will turn off the camera to preserve the battery.

I tried to plug my vantru into a fuse that the parking mode would work with but ultimately still had some unexplained parasitic draw.

ended up changing it to a fuse that it comes on when car comes on.

was not difficult and wish I went through the mirror housing if I could redo it all.

Unfortunately it will be a parasitic draw with the hardwiring kit only when the camera is activated based on your settings but it shouldn't be constant.

If you're using the parking mode, you have the option for either collision detected or motion detected and the camera should only come on based on those settings. Motion detected will of course have more activity if your vehicle is in an area to detect a lot of motion but you do have the option of setting the sensitivity. If collision is set for the parking mode, it should only activate the camera to record if your car has an impact.

#32 fuse is the remote keyless entry for constant power source for battery and the #23 fuse is the ACC switched source for the power windows to only work when the car is on. It's important to make sure that the setting on your hardwire kit is set to 12 volts so the camera will not draw any power of it ever hits that threshold.

Since I have a convertible hardwireing to the fuse box is not something I wanted to tackle. So I used this device. It's super simple to connect but is a bit bulky. Still, I was able to conceal the device and wiring. Concealment would be much easier in a car with a headliner. The one drawback is it only provides switched power, no constant power for a parked mode.
My other cars are hardwired to the interior fuse panel. Fuse taps make it near fool proof.

The newer vehicles are finicky with electronics. I used the USB cable mine came with and ran it down the a pillar and then under the inner sill. Ran that under the carpet and then up into the center console. I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the console pulled the usb up through and then plug it in to the USB port there.
Is clean and switched power. And if need to unplug it. It’s quick and easy

What year is your Stang? I want to know if we have same fuses or not so I could run what you’re running. And do you have it running in parking mode? Looks like we have 2 different hard wire kits. Mine has the option to set a timer

I recently installed this. Absolutely incredible fit and finish. Comes with a plastic cover and replicates an OEM look with the camera integrated into it, and a wiring harness to connect to the rain sensor. If you want it to record when the car is parked the kit comes with an OBD2 connector which will provide power for it to record parking lot video. Easy setup, and lots of options to configure. HUGE sd card comes with the kit. 10/10
